Even cablecards are going to be an O(n) recurring cost. OTA HD is highly limited however. The OTA networks carry just a few hours of HD per day. Digital cable with CableCard (which some providers don't charge for IIRC, so f(n) = $0) offers a larger selection of HD and offers networks that are HD 24x7 (so much larger selection of actual HD content). All but 1 or 2 of the 10 stations here broadcast 24/7 in HD format. How much of that is in widescreen (real HD), I couldn't say for sure, but most of primetime and late shows are. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |

Those "few hours" = About 100% of prime-time series programming (except some reality shows) and sports on the six national broadcast networks, plus an increasing number of morning (Good Morning America and Today), daytime (The Young and the Restless), syndication (Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy), late night (Conan, Leno, Letterman). Me, I have cable plus over-the-air because I love the 24 hour-HD cable channels, but there's more than enough HD programming for most peoples' tastes on over-the-air. -- URL:http://www.pobox.com/~ylee/ PERTH ---- * Homemade 2.8TB RAID 5 storage array: URL:http://groups.google.ca/groups?selm=slrnd1g04a.5mt.ylee%40pobox.com |
