Subject: Television Magazine

Sincere apologies for the mass nature of this email, but it seamed the most
efficient way of getting the news out.

It is with great regretted that I have to announce that Nexus Media
Communications has decided to close Television and Consumer Electronics
Magazine. Most of you will have been aware that the company has been looking
for a buyer for the magazine and those that I have spoken to on the subject
will remember that I was confident (as was Nexus) that a buyer could be
found. However, as part of a wider downsizing exercise, the company has
decided that a search for a new owner could not go on indefinitely and has
taken the decision to close the magazine. I am naturally very disappointed
because of all the hard work that myself and all of the contributors have
put in to turn the magazine around, something that I feel was well on the
way to happening. However, such is life and things do not always work out
the way we want them to. Maybe Television will re-emerge one day, but again
it is with deep regret I have to say that this is the end for this great
publication for now. Any queries of a business or subscription nature should
be directed to Nexus Media directly to Tony Greville on 01322 611 1308.

It's not clear whether this is part of the message you have published
here but anyway:-

If it *isn't* part of the original E-Mail then 'this' isn't
'email'.

Either way publishing the whole thing, unless you have permission,
seems a bit dodgy. Especially as (hence my confusion) it's not
terribly clear where the quoting of the original that you received
starts and ends.

Your concerns are noted. However, I thought it was self-explanatory,
although to be honest I didn't give it hours of consideration. The heading
said that it was a message from the editor of Television, and I signed it
with my name after leaving several blank lines. Since I'm not the editor of
Television or anything else I thought it would be clear enough that it was
the verbatim reproduction of a message from that poor sod. (I used to be the
editor of 'Gauntlet' -- World's largest circulation of any Doncaster-based
Jawa motorcycle repair magazine, and also the editor and proprietor of The
Micklebring Free Press -- We Gets Mostonit Frum Earwiggin, Restonit
Wemeksup, but I don't think these count). I suppose I could have made it
more clear, but I don't expect to have to 'dumb down' for this particular
group of correspondents, some of whom are really rather brainy I find.

I did consider whether I should 'publish' it here -- although 'publish' is a
rather grandiose word for a newsgroup, don't you think? -- but the original
was not a private letter sent to one person. It was, if the expression 'mass
nature' is anything to go by, a circular sent to a large number of people,
probably more people than read this newsgroup. The contents were not
contentious or embarrassing, so I thought it unlikely that there'd be any
objections from the original writer. And even if he did object, well, since
the matter directly concerns a number of people who read this group, I
thought he'd have to lump it. Anyway, he's presumably got the sack now.

And be advised it's not a good idea to criticise Bill on these forums :-)

My earliest copy of Television (Practical Television) is April 1950. I
actually started buying copies in the 70's for the DXTV column.

Gordon King is probably spinning in his grave.

I have to say thanks to Roger Bunney and Keith Hamer for introducing me to
the other side of TV.

No, I've given up in my quest for a better typography on this wrechedly
primitive medium.

Plenty do though, often with great justification.

Nothing anyone can say here could possible increase my egocentricity. Take
that how you like . . .
