Default Problem with DVD-R/RW discs

I have a Philips DVD622 DVD player attached to a Samsung LCD HDTV. It's
advantage is that it is compatible with both NTSC and PAL
discs. However when I insert a DVD burned on my Mac PowerBook it
invariably returns the cryptic response "Bad Disc".

I recently checked the User Manual, and lo and behold, on page 19 I
read the following:

"Helpful Hints:

‹ It may not be possible to play CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW in all cases due
to the type of disc or condition of the recording."

This hint is not very helpful since these are exactly the type of
disc used on the Mac (which does not accept DVD+R/RW discs for some
reason). Clearly I'm out of luck here.

My question is: How come a reputable company like Philips is able to
offer a player capable of handling a mere 50% of the discs normally
available in any good store? What is the problem here? And what exactly
is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R anyhow?

Default Problem with DVD-R/RW discs

The Philips DVD622 DVD is the same one I have and it will record on both
DVD +/- disk, try also to finalize the disk after recording a show, the mac
may not be able to read the disk unless it is finalized. I don't own a Mac
( someday might) but I am sure that a Mac can read a disk made with this
unit, I also had trouble reading some of the disks I made on a PC and once I
finalized it I was able to play it on 5 of the 12 computers I have ( I host
alot of servers) some which didn't play had older DVD Roms which I assume
was the problem of playing the disk back.

I hope that helps but you might also find a answser on the Philips Forums
too from other Mac users.

You may also want to update the units firmware

Some set top DVD players will play both DVD -R and DVD + R disks. Others
will only play one or the other. An old DVD player may not play either one.
+/-RW disks are less likely to work.

You will either have to upgrade your MACs DVD drive to dual format (and dual
layer), or get a new set top DVD player; it will say on the box what formats
it supports. My JVC will play both formats. I would be very careful about
getting a Sony.

Thanks Halftrack for that. Very helpful. I have downloaded the firmware
upgrade and will see what happens.

Just one comment: you suggest that the 622 can record? Mine is just a
simple player. I have no problem reading the burnt discs on the Mac
(they are burned with the iDVD program on the Mac); it is reading them
on the Philips that's the problem.
