Default Can HD signal be transmitted over a composite cable?

I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this anywhere. If was to
install a multi zone receiver with only composite outs, would I be able to
view HD programming over this?

In other words, can a single composite cable work for HD?

What about a single RG6 or RG59 coaxial?

Thanks!

Depends what form the signal is in to begin with. If it's a modulated
ATSC signal, then you can transmit it over RG6 (I don't recommend 59 for
anything much).

But normally, HDTV signals are in demodulated form, either analog or
digital and those can only be transmitted over appropriate cabling.
Analog requires three channels (for the Y, Pb, Pr components of the
signal, which are decoded to red, green and blue in the TV). You alse
need something for the audio, though that need not actually go to the TV.

So, to hook an HDTV cable on satellite box to an HDTV, you should have
HDMI, DVI or component (not composite) video cabling. You can get away
with using THREE composite cables to substitute for component if the runs
aren't too long. The really expensive cables often have no more going
for them than high price and a great warranty.

The receiver can't handle HD. Period.

Sure. HD-SDI. Expensive.

ATSC modulator. Expensive.

Thanks!

Does the quality suffer when it's modulated, in your opinion?

It wouldn't as it's the same process used for OTA broadcast. I just
finished watching 2 hours HD video transmitted between the computers
over the Cat 5 network cable. Any chance that could work for you too?

Happy New Year

Cat 5 cable would certainly be doable. Do you know of some kind of dongle
or hardware that goes between your TV and the cat 5 cable to decode it for
your regular TV and not your computer? In other words, I want to hook up a
Tivo to my TV. (see my next post below.)

Happy New Year to you too.

I can't see how. It's digital. You either have it or you don't.
But the only modulated ATSC signals around come from free-to-air broadcasts
by TV stations through an antenna. The antenna can be anything from rabbit
ears to a huge array, as long as it gets a clean enough signal from the
station to decode.
