Default 1080p sources

I am new to HD (Directv) and I just saw a demo of a 1080p TV in a
store. Fantastic picture, but he had to use a BluRay player to demo
it. Are there any broadcast sources for 1080p or is it strictly
limited to BluRay at this point.

Sorry if this has been asked before, as I just found this group and my
reader is only set to recover 1500 posts.

No 1080p broadcast at this point in time, that I know of.

I don't think there is any broadcast 1080p, and have heard that there
won't be any at least for the forseeable future. However, you can get
an idea what a "good" picture looks like by viewing a digital still
picture on your HDTV. Many are capable of reading from those memory
stick devices.... my Samsung DLP set will play a "slide show" from a
memory stick..... so I create a set of high-res images (1920x1080
pixels_ amd let the set display them. Absolutely stunning.

So far I don't have a set that will show 1080p, and without a source,
other than BluRay discs, I don't see much point in spending the $
right now. That was the crux of my original post.

No broadcast, but it isn't strictly limited to BluRay - if you hook
up a PC via DVI or DVI-HDMI cable, you can play 1080p video files
(Microsoft has some sample HD video files on a demo site).

Like I said earlier, that's hardly a reason to pay the $ for one of
the sets at this stage, especially since I don't even have anything to
put a BluRay disc in yet, either. Of course, if Salma Hayek were to
make an X rated movie in BluRay format, I might change my mind! You
know, something that I could/would watch over and over and over ....
Demos are OK to impress your friends and, in the stores, to make
sales, but beyond that, it is a waste of money.

I made the same point a while back and someone responded with "but the set will
up-convert non 1080p to 1080p so there is still a benefit".

I wonder if that is really true though. Surely up-converting isn't the same as
having a 1080p source. Is it actually better than 1080i being somewhere in
between? Wouldn't it also matter what you are up-converting from?

But if you are in the market for a display (like me), it will pay to
wait for a 1080p
set that meets my specs and pay the premium. I will have to live with it
for many
many years. I don't want to have a display that can't do 1080p when all
the HD Disc
stuff shakes out. I would of already jumped on the Sony A2000, but there
was a soft
pic problem... sooo I'm waiting for the next round of displays.
Arrrggghh :-)

And the watershed moment to me will be when Blockbuster has HD content
on their
shelves for rental.

Thanks goodness for all the HT mags (I get them all), AVS Forum and the
UseNet.
We can be much wiser and educated consumers these days, with the
"Internets" and all. LOL

Depends on what you want it for :-). I'm using my Westinghouse LVM-42w2
primarily as a computer monitor because the more dots I can get, the
better (and being strictly a monitor is was about half the price
of the 1080p LCD TVs with all the expensive ATSC tuner, cable card,
and other junk I'll never use - even if I bother to sign up for HD
cable someday, I'll be getting the signal from the cable box and still
won't have any use for the other electronics that jack up the price
of TVs).

If you're interested in using a PC to play video files, there are incredible
1080p short clips available from

http://www.fusionhdtv.co.kr/ENG/Download/Demo.aspx

I recommend Demo1, bottom of the list.
Korean language.
I'm using a Myhd PCI card fed directly to a Marantz DLP projector, I've
_never_ seen anything better than these clips.
