Default Pioneer DVR420 & 16x discs

Hi all,

I've had a Pioneer DVR420 HDD/DVD recorder for a couple of years now and
think it a wonderful bit of kit. I've been using 4x & 8x blanks, which have
burned at full speed, but recently I've switched to 16x blanks (usually
Taiyo Yuden, branded as Panasonic or Verbatim), and find that they will only
burn at 4x. The top burning speed of the machine is claimed to be 48x. Has
anyone else had the same trouble, and are there any firmware upgrades I
haven't been able to find?

Cheers,
L

Pioneer have an excellent customer support organisation. I suggest you take
a look at their website www.pioneer.co.uk or telephone them at 01753 789789.

The 48x will be for CDs, so far there are no DVDs that burn at that speed.

It's a hard drive-based DVD player, with no CD-burning capability.

So where did you get the idea that it can burn DVDs at 48x?

Looking at the specs I've seen on various web sites it looks like it
will only burn at a maximum of 8x for Rs and 4x for RWs. The new disks
aren't RWs are they? Perhaps if the device doesn't recognise the 16x
disks it reverts to 4x.
There are no commercially available DVD burners which go anywhere near
48x.
18x is about as fast as I've seen.

A good question as the operating instructions refer (on page 9) only to
DVD-R speeds up to 8x.

I thought I'd read it in the manual, but having re-read the FM quite a lot,
I realise I must have read it in a review or some promotional literature a
long time ago. I was surprised, I'll admit. Digging a little further, I've
got to the bottom of it. The burner in the 420 is an 8x burner. On the
lowest quality setting - which I never use - you can get 6 hours on a disc.
Somehow, someone has decided that this equates to 48x burning. Ah well.
Annoying that the 16x discs default to 4x, but better than my old computer
burner that treated all 8x discs as 1x.

Thanks for all your help, chaps.

L
