My receiver has about two dozen different sound modes, apart from a
straight decode-and-play, that it can use to affect a soundtrack, such as 70mm, spectacle, sci-fi, etc. What exactly are these and are they useful or are they just some crap to put on the box, kind of like a tiny boombox having a "surround sound" button? -- "Get rid of the Range Rover. Check the following online product reference. In a nutshell, they're
nothing more than pre-programmed delays, levels, and echos for your speakers. The documents show what each mode's soundfield is supposed to look like. Good luck, have fun! We enjoy our Yamaha home theatre amplifier! BTW, this reference doc is for the Yamaha 5540: http://www.yamaha.com/yec/customer/m...HTR-5540_e.pdf "Grand Inquisitor" wrote in message news ![]() My receiver has about two dozen different sound modes, apart from a straight decode-and-play, that it can use to affect a soundtrack, such as 70mm, spectacle, sci-fi, etc. What exactly are these and are they useful or are they just some crap to put on the box, kind of like a tiny boombox having a "surround sound" button? -- "Get rid of the Range Rover. I've used some of the Jazz Club's and Rock Concert on music with good results. And some mono video tracks can be made to sound better with some of the other modes, but mostly I never use 'em. Even the Enhanced DPL, DD, DTS is a bit too much even when lowering some of the parameters. But, I do have some very cheapo front effects speakers, maybe if they were higher quality the various modes would sound better (but, I have even tried the modes with the front effects way down and the results were fair to not very good). |

The only one worth a damn IMO is Dolby Pro Logic II (Music), which isn't a 'room mode' per se. -- -S. |
