Aren't the suggestions below overcomplicating the problem?
1) try a different set of cables OR
2) use a voltage tester (continuity meter--ohmmeter) to verify that green
goes
to green etc.
If that fails--the problem, alas, is with the unit itself

I've tried different cables. I am just wondering if the problem is with
the DVD player or the TV. The TV is new and this is the first time I am
using the component video. I will know for sure when I plug in the HD
PVR that I will be getting this week.

Why not run through the setup on the TV to make sure all the right stuff is
turned on for the specific input. (I would think that the problem lies
here)

Also run through the DVD setup to make sure all the right stuff is on for
that output. (Probably not the problem)

Do you have two component cable inputs? If you do, and you have the
cable/HDTV plugged into one of them, you cant use the other input for the
DVD player in progressive/HDTV mode. This is a by product of first
generation HDTVs.

I just hooked up my DVD player to my HDTV with component cables and I'm
getting a very blue picture. Looks like the cables are in the correct
positions.
Any suggestions as to what might be causing the problem?
And who makes cables that are coloured in the wrong order?

There is only one component cable input.

How do you have your set hooked up? Do you have cable/satellite? We'll
figure this out.

If you have not hooked the cables up incorrectly it is probably wither in
the setup of the TV or the DVD player. I had a DVD player where I could not
get any picture via component until I told it in the setup.

Final answer. I got a manual off the internet and the output was set to
s-video.
I had to hold the stop button down for a few seconds until 's-video'
showed and then changed to 'component' in the display.
Not very intuitive. You need a manual. Thank god for the internet.

Thanks for all the suggestions that pointed me in the correc direction.
Incidentally, I returned the Sharp and got a Sharp Aquos. Same size but
supposedly better quality.
Hopefully I will be happy until the price of 46'ers comes down.
