Default NTL Box to TV

Hi experts,

I have the following set up:

Sony KD28DX51 TV (2 SCART sockets)
VHS Recorder into one SCART
Sony DVD player into other SCART.
Pace NTL box connected via RF into back of TV and also into SCART2 on
VHS Recorder.

If I watch the NTL box via the RF connection, there is a faint(but
irritating) whistling/whooshing noise on the audio. It is fine if I watch it
using the passthrough on the VHS, but that means I have to have the video
recorder switched on all the time.

Questions:
1) Any idea what the whistling is? Just some interferance from somewhere?
Could it be a fault with the NTL box?
2) Would I be better off connecting the RF from the NTL box into the RF in
on the VHS and the SCART from the NTL box directly into the back of my TV?
(only thought of this as i was writing this message... I guess that may be
the answer(?))

Chris.

Are there two SCART's on the rear of the NTL box - one for VCR, the
other for TV?

There certainly are on my Telewest box. To the OP - why are you connecting
via RF? So last century!

I'm not the OP but as I watch TV (TW TV Drive) via a PC TV card I have to
connect via RF there's no other choice as far as I'm aware.

Hi, ignore my other flippant remark in this thread, I didn't read your OP
properly so hadn't clocked that you only two SCARTS on the TV.

'Pass-through' means that the signal should be able to be passed through a
device without that device being switched on, therefore it's possible that
you have connected the NTL box to the wrong socket on the VCR because the
VCR should allow this facility.

Try swappping the NTL box and TV SCART connections on the VCR and see what
happens.

I've just checked on my VCR - there's only one way to plug mine up because
one SCART is purely an input and the other is in/out. Perhaps both your VCR
SCARTS are in/out. I have a Freeview box connected to the input (AV1) and
the TV connected to the in/out (AV2). This allows the Freeview box to pass
through when the VCR is off.

If swapping the connections doesn't work there are SCART doublers available
which switch automatically between devices - Maplin would be a good place to
look for that type of thing. At least you wouldn't have to rely on the RF
connection.

Most TV cards have a Composite or S-Video in as well, you should be able to
get one of these signals from the TVDrive SCARTs.

There are two SCARTs on the back of the NTL box. Never worked out what the
other one was for. Connection for the VCR makes sense...
Doesn't help me really though, as the problem is that I don't have enough
SCARTs on the back of my TV for VCR, DVD and NTL connections.

Thanks,

Chris.

Hi Vaughan,
Thanks for your reply. I think I tried the other way round when I was
originally setting up. I don't think it worked at all. though I could be
mistaken, it was some time ago.
I'll give it a go, I suppose it might be worth having a quick look at the
settings menu on the VCR and see if there is any way of tinkering with the
inputs and outputs...?
Failing that, SCART doubler certainly seems to be the way to go. I've been
meaning to get one of those for ages now. Anyone like to suggest a
particular make that is good, or is it pretty much one is as good as
another? (Possibly not including the one I saw recently in Poundland - guess
how much!)

Cheers,

Chris.

On the topic, anyone know where I can get a manual for this NTL box to work
out what the connections on the back are for?
It is a standard NTL Pace cable-box. Not sure if there is more than one
version/model in existance, but this is the only type I've ever seen. I
believe there might be a NTL box that has a broadband connector on the back,
but this one doesn't. My broadband comes in to a CableModem via a different
cable...

Is this your NTL box? Pace Di4001
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds1898.html

It's normally,

TV1 Scart in-----------NTL Box TV out
TV2 Scart in-----DVD

With Sony TVs, you'll find one of the scarts is enabled for RGB - use
that one for your DVD.

VCR scart in/out-------NTL Box's VCR in/out

Put the NTL box into standby to watch the VCR, or (if you are lucky) you
might find it automatically "passes through" the signal when you power
on the VCR and hit 'play'.

Connected this way, the VCR can record from your aerial signal (if you
still have that) and the cable box.
