Default Should One Buy an Upconverting DVD Player?

I am considering buying a 1080p HDTV, like the Sony KDL-40V2500. It
contains BRAVIA circuitry which is supposed to do upconversion. I
don't plan to buy a Blue Ray or HD DVD player until the issue is
settled. In playing standard DVDs, would I get better results by
using one that upconverts to a 720p or 1080i output or would just
hooking up an ordinary DVD player give indistinguishable results?
Thanks.

Depends if the upconverting in the TV is better than the DVD player. The
absolute best upconverting player is the OPPO. Only sold on line from the
company Google it and see the amazing quality reports. looks like HD on my
set

I've been pleased with my Oppo 971. Oppo is now accepting orders for the
1080p 981: $229. I expect this will be an excellent SD player for any panel
that accepts 1080p.

There are many relevant DVD player threads at:

I'll scond the opinion of Oppo (971) being the best and also look on Oppo's
site for refurbished units if your budget minded like I am! I got a refirb
which was new in the box, the box had never been opened.

I have the "Highest Score in Benchmark Test" Oppo 971, but just have to warn
you that some movies look like absolute **** on it due to it's employment of
the faulty Farroudja chip.

my ¢¢? if you're spending that kind of coin on a tv, either:

1) go ahead and spend an extra _couple hundred_ dollars on an HD-DVD
solution that will upscale regular DVDs as well as the Oppo (minus the
artifacts) AND play the best looking HD movies available, OR

2) buy a cheap progressive scan dvd player and let your TV do the
upconversion.

the worst I've seen personally was the original Matrix, which induced
vomitting at about the 5 minute mark and prompted me to shut the player down
in disgust. other movies I can personally vouch for are Crouching Tiger and
Corpse Bride. while these weren't completely ruined, you found yourself
paying more attention to the artifacts than the movie itself. there were a
littany of immemorable movies I NetFlixxed that exhibited the bug to some
extent. sometimes it was barely noticeable, other times distracting, and in
the case of one of my favorite movies, the Matrix, it was completely
unwatchable.

So far nobody has said they have done the comparison, especially with
one of the recent SONY Bravia 1080p models. I am also into watching
plenty of DVDs that came from digitizing VHSs so I am wondering in
such cases would there be much of a difference.

Plays fine on my 971. Did you view this on a plasma or DLP display?
