I am considering buying the Humax and have a few questions.
The Humax documentation states that it requires 10cm clearance from things like a TV or a VCR (page GB4). It also says not to "stack electronic equipments on top of the product". While the shelf on my TV stand would place the device at least 10cm from the TV I would like to put it on that shelf stacked directly above a VCR and below a DVD player. Does anybody use the Humax in such a stack of electronic components and does it cause any problems? Also, does the device record and playback subtitles correctly and record and playback radio correctly? I'd appreciate any answers to these questions. Mike |

It talks about "electromagnetic influences" which should hardly be a problem with VCRs and DVD players. It also talks about leaving the slots on top of the product uncovered - there aren't any. I think they are standard safety instructions that someone has copied. The unit is cool running, with a small fan at the back, so there shouldn't be any problem with overheating. Also, does the device record and playback subtitles correctly and record and playback radio correctly? I'd appreciate any answers to these questions. Yes. And you can choose whether you want the subtitles on playback. All in all, a very good machine, which gets better with every software update. -- Max Demian |

One minor difference in the playback of radio channels is that the screen is blank, whereas the live version shows a graphic containing brief info about the programme. Subtitles are automatically recorded and can be enabled during playback. Matti |

No problems at all. -- Alex "I laugh in the face of danger. Then I hide until it goes away" www.drzoidberg.co.uk www.ebayfaq.co.uk |

I am considering buying the Humax and have a few questions. snip does the device record and playback subtitles correctly The subtitles aren't flawless. Occasionally, a line will flash onto the screen and then disappear before you can read it. I find this tolerable since I just use text on certain programmes to enhance normal listening. It might not be so good for a viewer who depends on the text. That said, it's still better than a number of Freeview devices I've seen. Also unlike some other devices, the subtitles are recorded automatically, without asking. |

Does anybody use the Humax in such a stack of electronic components and does it cause any problems? My Humax sits on a DVD player and not too far above it is the TV. I have not encountered any problem to date. However, when I had my Labgear Setpal in the same place all was not well. I first noticed the problem with my father-in-laws identical Setpal unit which also sits on top of a DVD player but is more than 6 inches clear of the TV. When I installed his Setpal the signal was perfect, break up once in a blue moon. Then he started to experience lots of breakup. The only thing different was he had purchased the DVD player which he put under the Setpal. Just out of curiosity I placed a reasonably meaty dictionary between the two. The perfect signal returned. I wasn't experiencing the breakup but I tried the same thing at home and my signal strength rose dramatically. I can only assume the Labgear was susceptable to electromagnetic interferece because it had a plastic case and not metal, as in the Humax. Graham |

Mike Also if you transfer the program to PC and play the file with VLC then you can view the subtitles on the PC too. Haven't yet found a reliable way of getting the subtitles onto a DVD though. Just to add a data point: My Humax sits on top of the DVD player, and there's a VCR about 4cm about it, with the TV itself about 20cm above that. I've had no problems so far, at least as far as I can tell. It really is a wonderful machine in all respects, and I'd recommend you to go for it. I've discovered that where I can place it is not compromised by any electromagnetic effect of adjacent equipment but by the dimensions and relative position of the feet of the boxes! The (Panasonic) VCR is what I would describe as full size in both width and depth. The (Samsung) DVD player is full width but less than full depth. The Humax is less than full width but full depth. The only place it can go and not look strange is above the DVD player, however when its feet are sitting correctly on the DVD its front panel protrudes by a couple of centimetres. My solution has been to line up the front panels and allow the Humax to protrude past the DVD at the rear. This leaves the rear feet of the Humax in mid-air, so I've levelled the box by resting it on an extremely thick rubber mousemat (too thick for its intended purpose IMO). I'm not so new to digital TV - my only previous STB was an early Panasonic TU-CT20 which I bought during the Freeview pre-launch trials. My initial impression of the Humax is that it's very good, but of course part of that comes from the fact that it's just a much better STB than the old Panasonic, which only had now+next. The UI is pretty intuitive to me - I've not needed to read the manual to figure out and successfully use the basic STB and PVR functions. Mike |
