I noticed that when I rescanned my Topfield 5800pvr it searched through
BandIII VHF. Does anyone know if there will be UK DTT services in that band or, since I used to be a DXer, any proposed European services. I live in East Kent and regularly pick up Analogue French Belgium and Dutch services in Band I and III VHF. Regards and TIA |

No VHF DTT in the U.K., no, but it is apparently used in Germany - see www.dvb.org/about_dvb/dvb_worldwide/germany/ (bottom of the page). Germany is a major market in Europe for the Topfield PVR, so it's not surprising that Band III is included. André Coutanche |

Doubtful, in the UK part of that band is used by DAB and part for trunked PMR. -- Ian G8ILZ |

Actually its a really good test of the receiver to test using Italy modulation, they are getting the same bit rate from 7MHz VHF as the UK gets from 8MHz (64QAM) UHF. Most areas that used VHF in analogue are now staying with UHF for digital, probably for future frequency planning simplicity. France and Finland are good examples, although Finland reserves the right to ise VHF later on but could be a problem since most of their STBs are UHF only. -- Tony |

If you want to be pedantic the UK already does use VHF Band III for Digital Terrestrial Television. BBC1, ITV1, Channel 4, E4 and the ITN News Channel are broadcast nationally on 222 MHz (223.9 MHz in Scotland) via the Digital One network. The pictures are very small (only about 120 lines), the bitrate is very low (only 96 kbps per channel), and you can only unencrypt the broadcasts if you subscribe to Virgin Mobile. Nevertheless it's Digital, it's Terrestrial, it's Television, and it's on Band III VHF. |

Just to join in the pedantry, it's my understanding that (1) the Channel 4 service you refer to is not at present what you see on an ordinary TV but bite-size programme chunks provided by the Channel 4 company; and (2) the trial BBC One service is not encrypted. -- Richard L. |

I think the UK should start HD DTT transmisions on VHF. Just about all
countries still use VHF Band III though Band I they are shutting down now which is a shame for any TV DX'ers which pick up these transmissions during the sporadic E season each year from May - September Band III for TV has a lot going for it, you can have far fewer lower powered relays which have a much better coverage than UHF obviously |

AFAIK it was the usual mess-up by the UK. We agreed to use UHF only (PAL-I) rather than the, still used by most of Europe UHF+VHF (PAL-B/G). Using VHF for other things in the UK was then severely limited by the need not to cause interference on the continent! No the move to UHF was at the time and still is a sensible decision. There is much more usable spectrum suited to TV reception. VHF Band 3 contains some PMR, Services ancillary to broadcasting, and of course DAB!... -- Tony Sayer |

Btw was'nt it so daft for years we had the police on AM on the upper part of Band II...crazy ! But no HD on VHF never going to happen of course. I just hope UHF is solely used for HD freeview in a few years |
