Why DLP?

You can get a good 42 inch plasma for under $1400 now.

In my case, it's because I don't want/need it to hang on the wall, so it
seems rather pointless to buy a plasma or LCD panel, and it's going to be a
secondary TV that needs to fit in a space about 44" wide. Not everyone has
any reason to want to hang their TV on the wall.

True, but a plasma or HD will have a brighter picture than a DLP.

It doesn't have to be hanging from the wall to be sitting right up next
to it and not sticking out in the room.

Not taking up a lot of the room is a good thing.

They usually come with a stand for non-wall mount use.
