Default sony dvd recorder not stopping problem

Hi,

Have generally been happy with the Sony DVD recorder RDR-HXD710 apart from
the odd freeze and 20 minute shutdown.

Recently however it will sometimes not stop recording at the end of a
program. The recording keeps going until another recording starts or I
press the rec stop button. Then in the title list the name of the program
is not displayed - all I get is the program length.

Has anyone else seen this problem? Could it be to do with the info being
sent out to the freeview channel.

I've never had the arial checked for signal strength as it always seemed to
work fine - would getting a better signal help?

Thanks,

Kevin

The 710 (and its cousins) have well known issues regarding this:-

Having read the forum posts I am astounded by the enduring optimism of
users. Don't they know its standard business practice never to admit the
product has a fault. If they all did what they should and took their boxes
back demanding a refund under 'not fit for purpose', warehouses would be
piled high with them.

The report of boxes being returned for repair and having unecessary parts
replaced without resolving the problem smacks of past practices in the motor
repair trade. I don't have one of the models quoted, mine was a 210 (non
HDD) but when it went wrong (after 3 mths) the reaction of the service
reception desk was 'its probably got dust on the heads'. Do they say that
about every thing?

Reminds me of a watchmaker here,(on the coast) who made a living by telling
every cutomer who came in with a watch that had stopped 'Its got sand in it.
Needs cleaning'. Forty years later and we are no further forward.

However there are enough people out there who will be pursuaded by the smart
showrooms of independent retailers and the 'quality' brand name and will
continue to buy on that alone.

Perhaps the most telling comment was by the Sony representative 'Dave
Cotter' who is quoted as saying 'Sony never listens to its cutomers'. I'm
sure he spoke the truth.

Kevin - Di you find an answer to your problem re the length of the
program appearing instead of the name in the title list? It's
happening on my machine too.

This is a common fault - try giving the machine a reset. Either pull
the mains out for a few seconds and repower, or hold down the Power On
/ Off switch for ten seconds, after which the machine will perform a
reset.

I have tried:
- switching off at the mains for a few seconds and then turning back
on
- going through initial easy setup procedure again

Neither have worked. However I haven't tried actually physically
pulling the plug out. Does this make a difference? I will try tonight
to see what happens

There are lots more posts RE the 710 over at www.digitalspy.co.uk

My take on it is this:

1. The faults of locking up, not stopping recording at the end of a program
and naming the program incorrectly are common the the Sony HDD recorders.

2. Sony are trying to avoid the issue and are currently not admitting to it.

3. It will never be fixed because the engineers behind the 710 left to work
for tvonics and if it is the usual software project then the code will not
be maintainable by anyone else.

4. I am taking my unit back and asking for a full refund.

5. Then getting a Panasonic

Just to clarify some comments in the orginal post:

1) The team of engineers at TVonics have never worked on the 710.
2) They did not leave to form TVonics.
3) The team of ex-sony engineers were recruited several months after
leaving Sony (following the closure of the Pencoed Digital TV
development centre).
4) TVonics is an independent company which designs and manufactures
Digital Set Top Boxes and Digital Video Recorders.

Best regards

Paul Fellows
CEO TVonics Limited.

I found the same thing with the Sony RDRGX210S! On top of the problems
mentioned above, it would then show a screen dump of some drive and path
details, about six characters width in red on the left-hand side of the
screen.

Also, having gone through three such machines there was a fault with the
amp circuitry in all these machines where the sound level would drop
down over time so much that it was possible to turn the tv volume right
to the top level without hearing much.

In despair I bought a cheap Alba which even came up with a repair disk
feature and fixed a disk screwed up by the Sony.
