You can get a 50" DLP for half that amount. Sony, Mitsubishi, and
Samsung are among just a few who make good products. Go to cnet.com
for reviews and prices.

46 inch Sony or Sharp LCD. Make sure it is the 1920 x 1080 version that does
1080P. You might see good prices on 45"Sharps; they are leftover older
versions, not in the same class as the new.

In that price range, the 50" Panasonic TH-50PX60U plasma is among the
best for overall picture quality. List price has dropped to $2800 USD,
can be had at many places for 10% or more less than that.

But what are you planning to do with the HD TV? Lots of computer
gaming? Viewing in a brightly light room? In those 2 situations, the LCD
flat panel may be the better choice. Otherwise for sports, movies, and
general TV viewing, the better brand name plasmas still offer the best
picture quality.

If your budget stretches to $4K USD, the Pioneer 50" 5070 plasma is
perhaps the best 50" plasma under 5 grand.
