Default German channels on satellite?

Hi there.

Can you receive German language channels on a standard Sky satellite system
as installed by the Sky people?

I'm aware you can get DW TV on 801 ... but I think that's the only German
language channel on the EPG, am I right?

Is it possible to manually tune in to German language channels using my
existing system, if there are no others on the EPG?

Or lastly, if none of the above are possible or much cop ... how can I get
German language channels in my home?

(an elderly family members from Germany is coming to stay for a month and
would really like to be able to watch German language programmes)

Cheers for any thoughts. Interested in all options, though easier and
cheaper the better.

....Damon

Oh just a quick followup to my original question. I guess the other question
is: is it possible to alter the language options in the menus to receive
existing English channels in German? So far I've tried on a few movie
channels and drawn a blank. Are there any with a complementary German
soundtrack?

Thanks again.

There are only two channels likely to have German audio: DW and
Euronews.

DW is German by default and if there is a German sub-carrier on
Euronews then you can access it from the setup menu.

German tv and radios use the Astra 19E satellite (the one used in the
analogue era by Sky). You need an additional dish - I don't know if a dual
feed dish is feaseble in your area - and of course a _real_ satellite
receiver, not the Sky rubbish. Every good installer can help you. I don't
know if they actually want to do it, because it's a bit more complicated
than putting a normal Sky dish. You will find on the web plenty of good
and cheap FTA receivers. Just try

It's worth the pain! You will receive _all_ German radio and tv programmes
both private and state owned services. I believe it's much better than Sky
(but I don't watch films and sport)

I tried tapping in the frequencies into my regular Sky Digital box this
evening 11.954 horizontal 27.5 3/4 or somesuch. Doesn't mean much to me. But
it said 'signal not found'.

Is that because my dish is pointing in the wrong direction? How do these
things work?

Cheers.

Your Sky dish will be pointing at the wrong satellites, it will be
pointing at 28.2/5e when you need it to point at 19.2e. Sky-crippled
dodgy boxes are useless, ideally you'd get a proper satellite receiver
and get a dish pointed at 19.2e.

Sky boxes work just fine to pick up the German channels on 19.2e. It's
fiddly but it works.
