I just bought a HDTV monitor and need the cable box as a tuner. If I wanted
to use my VCR as a TV tuner and wanted hi-def, what is Comcast obligated to provide to me at a bare minimum? I hate to shell out an additional $14/month for the box rental and HD fee. Thanks! Eddie G |

Its also possible that even that won't work on the cable. The only way to free HDTV is Over The Air. Many, but not all, can do this. GG |

if you get comcast or time warner they will lease out the box for HDTV
and if you want DVRs. Its only like $10 a month for the box and will get you the local HD channels like CBS and NBC. whosbest54 wrote: In article , says... "G-squared" wrote in message oups.com... Contact them and ask. I suspect the only variables will be the number of channels you get and if you want a DVR. You'll have to rent their HD box, with or without the DVR built in, if they offer it. The channel line up cable offers is usually in tiers. The lowest tier is normally the local stations they offer and perhaps a couple others. The lowest tier likely also includes their SD digital lineup. As another poster already mentioned, you could purchase an OTA HD tuner and use an antenna to get the local OTA digital channels for free. whosbest54 -- The flamewars are over...if you want it. In most places you can get a limited basic subscription for $15-20/month. You can get an HD set top box for an additional $5/month and that will get you all the broadcast HD channels available in your area (usually FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC, & PBS). It will not get you Discovery or ESPN in HD. If your TV has a QAM HD tuner built in you don't need the set top box and don't have to pay the $5 HD fee. If you want the HD DVR you have to upgrade to the expanded basic (also called "standard cable"). Now it's about $45/month + $10/month for the DVR + $5/month for "HD". If you get the $10 Digital Classic package they wave the $5 HD fee and you get Discovery and ESPN HD. -- E Frank Ball |

Comcast will supply HDTV with a contract for renting their respective HD Box
and signing up for a block of HD Programming. Their basic service ($14.95??) DO NOT include any digital or HD programming at all. If your HDTV has a built in ATSC Tuner just connect it to an outside antenna, you will receive the analog, digital, and HD signals being currently broadcast in your respective area. If the set is not actually a HDTV, having an ATSC tuner then you will need either a HD Tuner box or a HD CABLE box. wrote in message ups.com... if you get comcast or time warner they will lease out the box for HDTV and if you want DVRs. That's assuming they have a retransmit agreement with the local station. There are several instances across the U.S. where this is a problem. That's definitely the case where I live...I can only get ABC HD OTA. Dave Clary/Corpus Christi, Tx Home: http://davidclary.com |

In article , says...
You can get an HD set top box for an additional $5/month and that will get you all the broadcast HD channels available in your area (usually FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC, & PBS). Provided they have retransmission agreements for those local stations. If your TV has a QAM HD tuner built in you don't need the set top box and don't have to pay the $5 HD fee. Only for the unencrypted digital and HD stations they carry. The OP said the set is a monitor with no tuner. whosbest54 -- The flamewars are over...if you want it.
