Default comcast and hd rental

I just bought a HDTV monitor and need the cable box as a tuner. If I wanted
to use my VCR as a TV tuner and wanted hi-def, what is Comcast obligated to
provide to me at a bare minimum? I hate to shell out an additional
$14/month for the box rental and HD fee.

Thanks!

The tuner in your VCR is std def. Its also possible that even that
won't work on the cable. The only way to free HDTV is Over The Air.
Many, but not all, can do this.

I didn't mean free...I meant what is the lowest-cost that Comcast can offer
me? There might be something they have that they don't offer unless you
ask...like the "short cappuccino" at Starbucks.

Contact them and ask. I suspect the only variables will be the number of
channels you get and if you want a DVR. You'll have to rent their HD box,
with or without the DVR built in, if they offer it.

The channel line up cable offers is usually in tiers. The lowest tier is
normally the local stations they offer and perhaps a couple others. The
lowest tier likely also includes their SD digital lineup.

As another poster already mentioned, you could purchase an OTA HD tuner and
use an antenna to get the local OTA digital channels for free.

if you get comcast or time warner they will lease out the box for HDTV
and if you want DVRs. Its only like $10 a month for the box and will
get you the local HD channels like CBS and NBC.

VCRs don't tune HD.

The rates for Comcast are different in every city. In most places you can
get a limited basic subscription for $15-20/month. You can get an HD set
top box for an additional $5/month and that will get you all the broadcast
HD channels available in your area (usually FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC, & PBS). It
will not get you Discovery or ESPN in HD. If your TV has a QAM HD tuner
built in you don't need the set top box and don't have to pay the $5 HD
fee.

If you want the HD DVR you have to upgrade to the expanded basic (also
called "standard cable"). Now it's about $45/month + $10/month for the
DVR + $5/month for "HD". If you get the $10 Digital Classic package
they wave the $5 HD fee and you get Discovery and ESPN HD.

Comcast will supply HDTV with a contract for renting their respective HD Box
and signing up for a block of HD Programming. Their basic service ($14.95??)
DO NOT include any digital or HD programming at all.
If your HDTV has a built in ATSC Tuner just connect it to an outside
antenna, you will receive the analog, digital, and HD signals being
currently broadcast in your respective area. If the set is not actually a
HDTV, having an ATSC tuner then you will need either a HD Tuner box or a HD
CABLE box.
