Default Ropey sound for CMA awards BBC2 Sat 11 Nov

Before I even start, don't anyone get at me for even wanting to watch
the CMA awards on BBC2 (via FreeView from Crystal Palace) on Sat night.
But the technical handling of what is, in the US, a major event was
startlingly poor.

The picture was only 4:3 which was disappointing, but no more than I've
come to expect from many overseas events.

But the sound! All the live audience sound seemed flanged or comb
filtered, like listening down a drainpipe. And no bottom end on any of
the music.

Couldn't put my finger on what technical thing could have caused this -
did anyone else notice it?

It's always tucked away into the early hours on a Saturday night &
never publicised!
