Default Will a sky + box work with no signal?

I am about to move to the Middle East (Bahrain) and was wondering if I
could just use my sky + box as a 'player' with no signal being
received? You might ask why? Well, i know I cannot use sky + out
there unless I use a disk the size of a small planet and with a young
child in tow i thought I would probably save money by taking the sky
box with me loaded up with the wee ones fav CBeebies programmes than I
would going out and buying the DVD's. i know I could sell the box on
ebay but i reckon it will still be cheaper. Can anyone think of a
reason why the box wont play recorded tv when no signal is being
received?

Incidently, Bahrain operates on the same electrical infrastructure as
the UK and i am also taking the TV it is plugged into at the moment so
there should be no problems there.

Nope, for recorded programmes to play, you need an input signal (pain I
know!)

Would it work if you just plugged in a bit of cable with an LNB at the
other end as a "load" ?

No, the dish has to be able to *see* the signal at the satellite end too
sadly :-(

Well, If it helps I've had Sky+ for a fair amount of time and first time I
tried I got nothing at all.

So I think it's always needed to be to *see* the satellite probably because
the system records to the Hard drive in encrypted format and needs to check
your still a legit subscriber to enable playback.

I suppose if it was more like TIVO and recorded in normal format like a VCR
or DVD Recorder we'd be o-k :-(

I'm pretty sure for instance if you cancel the movie channels having
subscribed and have some movies recorded then attempt to play them AFTER the
cancellation date,They won't play back.

This is correct, the subscription enables _watching_, not recording.
You can record films without a subscription and then later play them
back when you have a subscription. Incidentally trying to play back a
recording for a channel you are not subscribed to can crash some boxes.

Only if you pay the 10pounds/month subscription to Sky+ that enables recording.

No, except the TV's tuner will probably not be able to receive any local
Bahrain signals.
