Default TV keeps going into wide mode

I have a problem with my TV but am trying to find out if its Sky (sky+) or
the TV.
It keep switching into wide mode, everything is big and cut off the screen.
It happens for about 5 seconds then goes back to normal, and repeats this
for about 10 minutes then may not happen again until the next day.

My (Philips) auto-adjusts so the picture fills the screen, so jumps
from time to time when the program source or content changes.
I could set a fixed aspect ratio, but then, depending on content,
I might get full screen, letterbox, or sidebars.
The auto seems to work very well.
Your set may have a similar menu option for fixed or auto aspect
ratio.

Thanks. It is set to 4:3. I do have options for auto and widescreen
(although why would anyone want wide on a 4:3).
Its only just started doing this over the past week so I think maybe it is
the TV playing silly beggars.

As it has an auto mode maybe it has started switching aspect ratio
when it shouldn't.
If that's the cause, and it's intermittent or infrequent, tracing the
problem may be difficult.
If it's 4 years old getting the dust out may be a good idea, it tends
to collect around high potential points (beware) and cause flash
overs (eg around CRT base, spark gaps and HV connector).
Drying out capacitors and PSU problems start to occur once
out of warranty.
Non-CRT the plasma/TFTs tend to suffer connector and LSI
problems but yours is almost certainly at that age CRT.
