There is also a much nearer transmitter than "ally pally", actually

case it really would only be the very local area that uses this, its
probably not a transmitter you've heard of.

So, what's it called then? Or where is it?

I did ask my dad but he was
kind of useless even though he redirected it himself, he can't remember
where our antenna is pointing to

It must run in the family, eh?

We seem to have airials pointing all over the place. Most of them seem
to be pointing in a certain direction, although I'm not sure if that's
south or not.

God, your school isn't doing a very good job is it? Can you tell left from
right yet?

They are all on long poles, around 3 meteres or so off the chimney!

How novel.

Freesat might be the answer. If not then I just gotta move out, as
these guys are far too old and refusing to adapt to get these channels.

Probably have to wait another 3 or 4 years before you're old enough though,
eh?
And you accuse other people of being trolls..... go away little boy.

So anyone young is a troll?

I hope you never have children. You'll hate them from the moment they
are born.

But we'll probably never need to worry about that with your foul
judgemental attitude, jumping at the throat any friendly stranger you
meet. Go away old man.

When you grow up maybe you'll learn not to be such a pratt, I doubt it
though.

Have you looked around your road? You need to look for horizontally
polarized aerials pointing vagely south. I'll bet most of the ones near you
are vertical pointing towards Ally Pally.

Actually Ally Pally is a rare example of a horizontally polarized relay.

Is there an easy way to get freeview working in N3 1RD?

I checked on wolfbane:
http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd....T=10&OS=n3+1rd

It says that... I need an "Amplified extra hi-gain" antenna, whatever
that means.

It means you need an above average sensitive aerial and even then it needs
to be amplified.

How many DB is the "extra hi-gain" anyhow?

Basically I'm 14 miles from Crystal Palace where the transmitter is
and, about 2/3rds of the way down a hill, so being near the bottom of a
hill doesn't help!

But are you getting your TV pictures from Crystal Palace? The fact that you
cannot get Five at all makes me think you might be getting pictures from
elsewhere (Ally Palace?).

My dad has set up the antenna before but he is a bit clueless when it
comes to electronics, he can barely tell the difference between a SCART
cable and an antenna. The wiring looks bare, old and frayed when it
meets the indoor amplifier.

So I'm thinking I might need either to redirect my antenna ontop of the
roof to face crystal palace.

That is the start of things! If you are not pointing at CP, you have no
chance.

Or.... get a new antenna (no idea how good
this current one is but I won't be surprised if it sucks knowing my
cheap-skate parents).

Or just pay a professional to get it done.

Rather do it myself really.

Any ideas anyone? We've tried indoor aeriels before, it's just
impossible in my part of the street.

If it is necessary to have an amplified high gain aerial, then an indoor one
is waste of time for CP.

You can get a professional in who can take readings and tell you if DTT is
possible or not.

You're probably on Ally Pally at the moment. There's a chance you won't

get
CP in your location. You want a cheap way of getting digital - How about
waiting 5 years till they bring it to Ally Pally.

I'm sure you could think of a less stupid answer though?

Why and how is that person's answer stupid? You wanted a cheap solution and
waiting and spending nothing until 2012 seems very cheap to me. As you are
asking for help from people more knowledgeable than you, it might pay you
not to be rude or sarcastic.

Also, we might be pointed to "Ally Pally"... but actually there is also
a much nearer transmitter, actually ontop of a block of flats nearby.

Poplar?

Which way do the rods on the aerial point? Horizontally or vertically?

We might be using that one, in that case it really would only be the
very local area that uses this, its probably not a transmitter you've
heard of.

You would be surprised, but it will be useless for DTT at present.

Do your parents a favour and move out, ideally to somewhere where you

can

You idiot. I could defend myself but there's no point, you are just a
random troll, you don't even know me or know what the hell you are
talking about.

The only troll would appear to be you.
