Is there an easy way to get freeview working in N3 1RD?
I checked on wolfbane: http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd....T=10&OS=n3+1rd It says that... I need an "Amplified extra hi-gain" antenna, whatever that means. How many DB is the "extra hi-gain" anyhow? Basically I'm 14 miles from Crystal Palace where the transmitter is and, about 2/3rds of the way down a hill, so being near the bottom of a hill doesn't help! I bought a freeview adaptor for my SCART TV... but no joy. It can't find any signal, despite that we get the 4 terrestrial channels OK. (We can't get C5 right now though ) My parents are a bit old andrefusing to adapt to new things, so 4 channels are fine for them. My dad has set up the antenna before but he is a bit clueless when it comes to electronics, he can barely tell the difference between a SCART cable and an antenna. The wiring looks bare, old and frayed when it meets the indoor amplifier. So I'm thinking I might need either to redirect my antenna ontop of the roof to face crystal palace. Or.... get a new antenna (no idea how good this current one is but I won't be surprised if it sucks knowing my cheap-skate parents). Or just pay a professional to get it done. Rather do it myself really. Any ideas anyone? We've tried indoor aeriels before, it's just impossible in my part of the street. |

Oh...
and the reception for our existing 4 channels is kinda crap also ![]() It's a little fuzzy, definitely not clear and sharp, viewable but definitely not perfect. And we can't get C5 and digital either. So yeah it definitely looks like we need a non-sucky aeriel installed. Or can we install a satelite to get the freeview? We have a satelite, with a cheap box as usual as my parents are cheapskates. they didn't even want to afford the basic channels, they only receive the free ones and the pointed the dish towards the arabian channels :[ I even had to buy the TV and digital VCR for them seeing as they are such cheapskates. All the newest and best equipment in this house comes from me, haha. |

There's a chance you won't get CP in your location. You want a cheap way of getting digital - How about waiting 5 years till they bring it to Ally Pally. |

....snip...
Since you can't get Ch5, you're not on CP as Ch5 would be pretty good (although actually from "just down the road from CP") if you were. As other posters have said, your options a 1. Wait for Ally Pally to get digital. 2. Get Freesat from Sky - slightly different stations but probably all you want. 3. Move (OK, maybe not the most helpful!). Have you looked around your road? You need to look for horizontally polarized aerials pointing vagely south. I'll bet most of the ones near you are vertical pointing towards Ally Pally. If any are pointing to CP, you might have a chance with a good group A (don't let them flog you a "digital" or wideband aerial) on a long mast, possibly with a booster. Frankly, at that sort of cost, look at Freesat instead ;-). Paul DS |

Also, we might be pointed to "Ally Pally"... but actually there is also a much nearer transmitter, actually ontop of a block of flats nearby. We might be using that one, in that case it really would only be the very local area that uses this, its probably not a transmitter you've heard of. |

Most of them seem to be pointing in a certain direction, although I'm not sure if that's south or not. And there seems to be an even mix of horizontal and vertical airials pointing in that main direction. They are all on long poles, around 3 meteres or so off the chimney! Freesat might be the answer. If not then I just gotta move out, as these guys are far too old and refusing to adapt to get these channels. |

I could defend myself but there's no point, you are just a random troll, you don't even know me or know what the hell you are talking about. see Crystal Palace, and at least two bus journeys away from mum and dad.
