Hey guys,
I have noticed that CRTs seem to be the best technology for video games and I really want a big TV for my video games, but I also want a good picture for them. The biggest CRTs I've seen are about 36" and that just doesn't satisfy me. Has anyone heard of any future CRTs that will be bigger? Or has anyone heard anything about CRTs even being made bigger? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Trey |

that just doesn't satisfy me. Has anyone heard of any future CRTs Sony and Mitsubish made 40" 4:3 HDTV CRT sets for a while. I can't comment on the Mitsubishi, but the Sony model was known to develop color splotches in the corners. If you do a search, you'll find a lot of discussion about this problem. The general consensus seems to be that a 40" tube was just more than CRT technology could handle. Toshiba and Canon have been working on a new tech, SED, that takes the best aspects of CRT and LCD and combines them. http://hardware.gotfrag.com/portal/story/32044/ If this tech ever makes it to market, it'll probably be the closest thing to what you're looking for. |

34" CRTs weigh in at over 200 lbs. One can easily do the math guesstimates for

When SED's become commercial in next year or so, CRT's will loose their last niche - high dynamic range and will disappear even more rapidly. |

The glass in larger CRT's becomes heavier and heavier as the CRT grows. To maintain the shape of the CRTube and provide adequate strength the glass also grows thicker. That also means that any stand for the TV must also be stronger (and more expensive). So the challenges are not just the technology for keeping the beams strong enough and safe enough, and maintaining convergence, they are also the challenges of materials and construction. |

And it weighs 2-40 lbs, so you can easily take it to other locations. You will need to control external light, though. |

They've really come down in price since everyone is focusing on newwer technologies. X |
