I recently purchased an LG 32FS4D 76cm widescreen, I'm in OZ hence the
metric size. I have a Panasonic EH50 DVD recorder running through a Yamaha Home Theatre system using component video and Optical audio. When I play a DVD and look at the audio type it says "Digital 3/2.1ch" even though the DVD is suppose to be 5.1. Have I got something wrong?? With the video side the DVD player is set to 16.9 and the TV to auto but it still doesn't fill the screen like I thought it should. |

You may need to tell your DVD player or stereo (or both) what speakers you actually have. Mine gives good 5.1 or DTS depending on the source (though I'm using an electrical cable to get the digital signal to the stereo). On the TV side, you may simply be encountering the fact that most cinema is filmed much wider than 16:9 and they letterbox it. The letterboxing is LESS than you'd see on a 4:3 TV. And you should make sure that your DVD has an anamorphic widescreen image encoded on it. And, if you get a choice of which to play, play that one. -- Dave Oldridge+ ICQ 1800667 |

How do I know which the anamorphic title is I load the DVD and select PLAY from the menu There is usually only options for different commentories 1) Look at the back. There should be a hint on which SIGNAL format being used. This can be either 4:3 or 16:9. There might also be a number that informs what CONTENT format is used. That is normally a ratio in the range 1.85 to 2.40. Ratio higher than 1.78 is "wider" than 16:9 and will show in letterbox also on a 16:9 display. 2) Look at the picture and try to find objects that you "know" are circular and filmed dead on (not from an angle). Measure the displayed width/hight ratio to make sure that displayed aspect ratio is correct. 3) You can use the free program IFOEDIT to examine the flags on the DVD to check what SIGNAL format is flaged for the title. This should be 4:3 or 16:9. 4) Note that in the event that you, like me, have an LCD panel in another aspect ratio than 16:9 (mine is 15:9), thin black stripes in top and bottom is expected on 16:9 SIGNAL format with 16:9 CONTENT format. /Jan |
