Hi,
Can anyone explain what is the difference between Projection Tv and LCD Tv? Are the same? Sony sells 50" Project TV with HD Ready, does it worth buying it? What is more preferred now a days. When I was browsing from catalog, Sony 50" Projection TV is cheaper then Sony 42" LCD Tv, has anyone have any idea? |

LCD is exactly what the name implies, a liquid crystal display. A projection TV has a high powered lamp that displays the image on a screen. LCD's might have an overall better picture and thus more expensive., but if your looking for a TV larger than 42", projection TV's are more practical and a lot cheaper. Most projection TV's today use the DLP technology, which offers a great picture. |

If one manufacturer makes different kinds of TV, you can generally rely on the information they give on the + and - of each type. I bought a Samsung, so I spent a lot of time on their web pages before I decided on what type to get. It's worth a visit.... or, if you have another brand that you consider, look up their web pages. Samsung is at: http://www.samsung.com/sg/products/tv/index.asp In general, HD Ready means there is no digital tuner included. This means you need to have another device to receive digital signals, like Direct TV or Cable. It a reasonable choice for some people.... not if you intend to get your content over the air (OTA). There are different kinds of "projection" TV, read those comments very carefully. LCD is not projcetion, but some kinds of projection tvs do make use of LCDs. There is not one "preferred" type of TV, if there was, there wouldn't be any reason to produce any of the other kinds. Some types are preferrable for some people.... it all depends on your needs and requirements. You'll need to read up about the differences, and determine what is important to you. They're totally different technologies. In short, an LCD has a constant bright white light behind a 3 color liquid crystal screen. The individual crystals are turned on/off by the electronics as needed thus allowing light of the selected color to pass thru. The sets are relatively light and thin. A rear projection set projects a picture from 3 bright colored sources onto a somewhat transparent screen from behind. You see the image thru the screen from the front. Because you are looking thru the scree, in my opinion, it loses some of the brightness and clarity and is better for viewing in darker rooms. These sets are also big and bulky. The alignment of the 3 colored sources is also critical. I know people will dispute that. Like I said - that's just my opinion :-) -=tom=- |
