Default ...trouble with HDMI input on Sony tv?

I have a 2 year old 57" Sony Wega rear projection HD-compatible tv
(model# KP-57WS520). About 1 week decided to go high def and purchased
a new Directv HD-DVR (model HR-20). The component cable delivers a
great picture but I was told the HDMI was better. I purchased an HDMI
cable but after hooking it up, could not receive any signal through it.
I checked all connections, spent a lot of time on the phone with
Directv and even Sony. No help. I went on the long shot that the cable
was bad so I went and purchased a better cable. No luck. I had an
installer come out to check the box and he told me that he sees this
problem fairly often with Sony televisions and some Sumsung as well. He
said that something about the technologies being different. I returned
the cable and have since been watching HD via component connection. Has
anyone ever heard of this problem? I have no other HD-ready/compatible
components to double check with. I have the new model HD-DVR so most of
directv's tech support are technologically ignorant to this model. Any
help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Eric

It could be a few things ,I don't know that tv or Box,but it sounds
like trouble
with the digital handshake ,did you try rebooting the direct TV box
while the TV is
on and the cable is plugged in? Are you sure the Direct TV box is set
to HDMi(This
is where I am not sure,if there is such a option) are you sure the
Direct TV HDMI is
working ,Maybe when the componet cable is conected the HDMI dosn't work
Maybe you can try another box?

I did reformat and reset the DVR. It actually had fixed a few bugs that
had existed but did not help with the HDMI issue. I tried unpluging all
other video/audio cable also. No luck. There is no option to changing
the output on the box. It is basically an over ride deal. The box does
does send a 1080i pic through the component cable. I have no other HD
ready/compatible component to test either with. Is there a big
difference in quality between the two?

I have heard of a HDMI compatibility problem with the H20-100 and
Samsung, but wasn't aware of one with the HR20. Component should look
practically the same, however some people claim to be able to tell the
difference.

I too have heard of a problem with earlier models of HD-DVRs and HDMIs
not working properly but not with the new one. Maybe it just hasn't
been out there long enough to develop this reputation?

Its not. Component is just fine. You should've been happy that component
video wasn't locked out of that HD-DVR.

A "better" digital cable? You think those zeros and ones are going to be
"better"?

Go back to using your component cable and get your money back for that
"better" HDMI cable.

You were ripped off. Don't fall for the cable hype.

This is precisely why HDMI cables are better than component cables. With a
component cable, it's much harder to dispute "cable hype". With a digital
cable, if the picture doesn't look hideously deformed, then you know,
without a doubt, that you're getting the best picture your equipment has to
offer.

Best thing for consumers would be everything to simply just use component.

I, along with most people, see absolutetly no difference in picture quality
between an analog component connection and a digital HDMI (or DVI)
connection.

The powers that be don't want you to be digital all the way to your TV
because they want you to clearly be able to see the grass on the field at
the Superbowl. They want control.

Have fun, a few years from now, when you come home to your DVR thinking that
it captured that program you wanted to time shift -- but instead it just
recorded five hours of commercials.

If they can do it, they will.
