I have been beating my remote off and on breaking it twice because it
don't change my channels or nothing on my DVR. (I really get ****ed when things don't work as advertised). Now I'm wondering if the DVR is the one going to sleep or not responding. How can you tell? The light on the remote blinks but the DVR goes stupid. Should I throw a brick at the DVR? -- 50% of all statistics are wrong. The rest don't matter. Clyde Crashcup |

A Tivo and the remote (at least on some units) can be programmed to use an alternate set of codes on the remote control. This is so you can have several Tivos in the same room and control them independently with several remote controls. If your remote and your Tivo somehow got set to different addresses, your remote control might not work. Offhand I can't find the instructions to set that, and it's probably different between my Series 1 and yours anyway. Also, it's worth trying fresh batteries in the remote. |

I was just wondering if it's the operating system on the DVR that could go to sleep or get too busy to react to the remote or the remote itself??? I've been blaming the remote. -- 50% of all statistics are wrong. The rest don't matter. Clyde Crashcup |

I was just wondering if it's the operating system on the DVR that could go to sleep or get too busy to react to the remote or the remote itself??? I've been blaming the remote. I have had remotes (not the Tivo remote, yet) go "dead" on me, until I reseat the batteries. If you're getting a light, though, this isn't likely the problem. I have had the Tivo go "comatose" on occasion (less than once every 6 months or so), sometimes after a power-line glitch. At this point, it not only doesn't respond to the remote, it also doesn't do scheduled recordings, either. Fix: unplug it and then plug it in again. If you've got weak batteries, or sometimes even with fresh ones, it matters how you aim the remote. Some directions won't work. This likely depends on how well walls reflect infrared and the layout of your room. I have on occasion seen the Tivo miss a remote keystroke because it was still doing something from the last one. It doesn't last long enough to try several times, then start banging the remote. |

Get yourself a universal remote and see if it suffers the same problems. Several things can cause trouble for remotes. Mainly other InfraRed noise, like from being in direct sunlight or the buttons sticking (on this or some other nearby remote). So start by testing it when it fails again. When it acts up, get the remote up close to the Tivo and shield it, use some cardboard or tinfoil. If the remote magically starts working then you've got noise from something else. If it's daylight then close the blinds and/or move the Tivo. If it's not sunlight then find whatever other IR devices you've got in the room and turn them off. Check the cushions of the couch and make sure there's not another remote in there with it's buttons stuck. There's also the chance you're using crappy batteries. Finally there's also the chance you've got something in the remote that's gummed up the buttons. If you get a universal remote and it doesn't have the same problems then, well, there's your answer. |
