Default New TV cable-hookup advice needed

Hi - I recently purchased a Pioneer HDTV Rear Projection TV....52" (a
couple years old model)

Question is how do I maximize my picture quality for both digital and
HDTV?

My cable box provides; composite, component, HDMI, and S-VIDEO output.

My TV has for inputs; composite, component, VGA (15 pin computer
monitor type input), and S-VIDEO.

I think the answer is going to be to use the component inputs/outputs.
Correct?

I am wondering, however, if going HDMI-VGA (may need to use a DVI/VGA
converter) would be better??

Thanks in advance for helping a newbie!!

James

Theoretically, the HDMI connection is supposed to offer the best
quality, because there are no A/D-D/A conversions, it's just straight
uncompressed digital signal, although there have been discussions here
about people saying they could not tell a difference between HDMI and
component connections. Personally, I see a better picture when using
HDMI. And another advantage is you use just one cable for video and
audio, instead of seperate cables for audio and video.

Thanks for the info - But, being that I dont have an HDMI nor a DVI
connection on the TV (I only have a VGA 15-Pin connection), would I
lose the HDMI quality? I'd have to attach a VGA adapter to the end of
the HDMI/DVI cable.

Both have component, so that's what I'd use. You do realize that you won't
get an HD picture from the cable co. unless you purchse their HD package.
At least that's what I've heard here. Since your TV has a vga input, it's
a no hassle connection for an HTPC. OTA provides the best quality HD
picture and it's free.

Sounds like component cabling is the way to go.

Anyone got any advice on a good set of component cables? A look at best
buy and radio shack shows me there are a number of different vendors
and cables ranging anywhere from $25 all they way to $150.

Thanks agin.

If I paid more than $10 bucks for a set of component cables and audio
cables together I feel like I got screwed.:-)

If you're in a hurry, rat shack has a set for $9.95. Might try a dollar
store. Got A/V cables there for a buck a pop.

I got 6' PureAV component cables made by Belkin from BrandSmart USA
for $19. At Amazon they're $16.75 plus shipping.
Belkin is a well known wire manufacturer and I used their products
since my ham days in the mid 60's. Well before rip-off's like Monster
cables even existed.

Just out of curiosity, I plugged in regular composite cables, which
look like plain old audio cables, into the component sockets and I
could not see any difference - at least with the 6' cables. I used the
Digital Video Essentials (DVE) DVD for my tests on color accuracy and
focus/sharpness.

Maybe if you need 12 footers or more you might see some degradation.

The sense of the group is that for shorter runs (12') www.monoprice.com is
worth a visit! Don't fall for the hype!
