Default Cumbria going DTT only a year earlier than planned

As I haven't noticed anyone else talking about this subject, thought
I'd mention it myself.

Saw it on the news a couple of days ago. Cumbria will go digital only
in one years time. I was expecting the DTT switch over to be delayed,
not brought forward. Anyone else have anything to say on this matter?

I understood they had given two summers to doing the necessary transmitter
work - the second as a back up in case of bad weather. It's been a good
summer.

The local newspaper just anounced that analogue switch off has been delayed
until 2009 for the Caldbeck transmitter.
It will however still go ahead from the Whitehaven site as planned.

It appears there have been problems with building the new mast at Caldbeck
(- I heard the concrete stay blocks failed the 7 day test, and had to be dug
up again !)
The newspaper article didn't mention this !

AIUI only the Whitehaven relay will be switched next year. There's all sorts
of other stories about Caldbeck not being ready etc, but it's difficult to
separate the truth from all the other journalistic 'excitement'.

I'm sure people in Cumbria will have, I reckon it will be chaos for the
first few weeks.

The 7 day test? Is that to make sure the mast doesn't fall down
within 7 days?

Does anyone else think like myself that the government should have mandated
several years ago that all new TVs,VCRs DVD recorders etc sold would have to
incorporate digital tuners?

There must have been tens of millions of pieces of equipment sold since the
switch-over date was first announced, and I can't help feeling that it
certainly would have made the transition a lot easier

Politics.
Tabloids.
Complaints about the government making products expensive.
Nanny state.
Consumers know what they are doing.
Market forces will sort things out.

But would not have had the support of anyone who thought they could make a
political point by opposing the idea.

Tory Party.
LibDems.
Tabloids.
Scots Nats.
CBI.
TV manufacturers industry (importers).

And would have led to demands for subsidies.

Even if the EC allowed it.

This is just for Whitehaven, everywhere else in Cumbria has been
delayed by 6 months due to build schedules a Caldbeck and them not
wanting to do the switch during the xmas period this came from a
question time type meeting in Kendal a few weeks back by the BBC and
DigitalUK, with all switch off QA's being answered by DigitalUK

Biggest laugh is that they want everyone in Whitehaven to buy a box
before it's available, who's going to buy a box that can't be tested
straight away.

Dave,
Kendal
