Default Plasma or LCD (but not DLP))

Hi all
I hope you can help

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I've only just been recommended
this newsgroup by someone from another newsgroup and have only just
subscribed

I'm looking to get a 50' wall mountable HD ready LCD or Plasma TV within
the next month or so
I've researched the net for comparisons;. pros and cons of each etc and find
very little difference, with both having pluses and minuses. I'm very
confused about them tbh.

I'm not concerned with viewing angle etc etc but am concerned with light
reflections (as the tv will be on a wall opposite a large window). The room
is around 30' square

AIUI LCD is better for 'glare' and reflections etc etc but plasma has better
colour resolutions although the colours fade with time. But then there's the
LCD 'motion blur' with fast moving images. So there are compensations with
them both.

I'm VERY confused with what to get. Budget is £5k max and I THINK i've
narrowed it down to Sony or Toshiba. (who is the best manufacturre of these
TV's?)

The screen will mainly be used for TV but I can envisage my sons wanting
to play computer games on them on the odd occasion. It will be the only TV
in the house. We have no SKY but I am thinking of getting cable TV

So what to get? Has anyone bought either of them and what are your views on
them? Any recommendations or advice?

TIA

sheri

Be prepared for idiots who use a simple typo on your part to raise a laugh.

That's about twelve times the size of any plasma I've ever seen.

I have both plasma and LCD in different rooms, and have years of experience
of both as well as having avidly read everything I can find about the pros
and cons of the available options.

My recommendation in your situation is to install a Pioneer 50" plasma and a
Sky+ satellite receiver (Sky+HD if you are a TV aficionado!). You will not
be disappointed!

Thank you Malcolm
Please could you tell me why I should install plasma and Sky?
None of my family are really big TV viewers (28 hrs/week worse case)
We only need one TV in the house and have never felt the need (until..maybe
now...maybe..) to install Sky

I am sorry but I need convincing ;-)

Have you considered a projector? You could probably get a better picture for
less outlay.

Apart from the High definition stuff to come, the best and most accurate
colour pictures, grading, colour rendering, lack of MPEG artefacts etc,
I have seen off-air in a domestic situation have been analogue
transmissions on an 8 odd year old CRT TV!.

Problem with most all UK digital broadcasts like radio, is that the bit
rates are too low i.e. theres too much stuff crammed in the space
available as it were!.......

I was in a very similar situation a short time ago. LCDs are improving
but, so are plasmas. I thought about brightness, motion blur and viewing
angle.

I discovered that the better plasmas have dealt with 'burn in' to the
point that they are no worse than CRT and they have upped the pixel
count for really excellent picture detail.

My advice is; take a favourite DVD (something with lots of movement,
detail, texture and lighting changes, not an animation), go to a helpful
shop and try them both. Adjust the picture to the way _you_ like it and
then make the decision.

I bought a Panasonic Viera (37") and I'm stunned at how good it is to
watch (and play games on).

All the best,
Tom

But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Wide screen TVs mounted flat against a wall look aesthetically more pleasing
and save space to boot
