I'm looking for a simple freeview STB to use as back up if there's any
delay in switching the cable over when we move house next month. I did have a Goodmans GDB5 but I gave to someone else who was in the same position but couldn't receive cable where they were moving. Anywhoo, I've been looking at the Wharfedale DV832B which is 30 quid at Argos at the moment and also at the Digihome DVB915 that Amazon have at 25. Anyone used either of these and able to comment? I'm leaning towards the Wharfedale at the moment. Stewart |

I don't know who, but I've noticed that the menu screens of many different named brands are all the same. |

I don't actually mean "named brands" as in well-known brand, but rather diggy boxes different names, tho' I have noticed a Phillips box with the same inners, which was £60, £35 extra to have the name "Philips" on it. |

Just take a look at the page for Alba plc and you might see why :O) http://www.albaplc.com/html/home.htm -- Paul (This sky, too, is folding under you) ------------------------------------------------------ Stop and Look http://www.geocities.com/dreamst8me/ |

I'm leaning towards the Wharfedale at the moment. In the last 12 months I have bought and returned to Argos, 1 Hitachi, 1 Philips and 2 Panasonic's. I am currently using the Wharfedale DV832B and for the first time, I am actually happy with its performance. No lock ups, no blockiness, no failed timer recordings, it just does what it is supposed to do. I'm getting used to its little quirks and they do not detract from its overall good performance. Considering it was almost half the price of the original Hitachi I purchased... ! Bob |

It has a channel display on it which resorts to a clock if on standby. |

I bought the Wharfedale and it's working fine, similar Vestel derived software to the Goodmans I used to have. Very bright LEDs display, I think it might end up getting switched right off at night if it's in the bedroom in the new flat. Software version is 6.3, is that the newest for this box? Stewart |

Thanks for this thread - I've just been out and bought one, and a few B&Q in-line switches that will avoid unplugging the thing (my TV signal amplifier has a ridiculously bright blue LED as well), and they should save enough electric to pay for themselves in about 300 years. Don't know what software version is, but there was something in the book about them waking themselves up at 3am and searching for themselves. Cheers -- Roger Hunt |
