Default Sony incompatability... with Sony

I have a KV-2762UB Sony television (1988, but an excellent picture).
About 3 weeks ago, I bought a Sony VTX-D800U Freeview box, thinking all
would be well.

About the same time, I started having trouble with my VCR - it only
gave monochrome images on my TV.

I've just realised that the problem is the Freeview remote control. Use
of any button on it causes the TV to interpret the message as "turn
down chroma", as though I had turned it down on the TV. This,
naturally, gives a monochrome picture.

Sony say they've not come across this fault, and I should talk my
dealer. Since the dealer is Argos, I don't expect much technical help
from them.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of fault?
Is it possible to select a different command set on either TV or
Freeview box, and so eliminate the problem?

The problem is to do with S-Video.

It sounds like the TV is expecting S-Video, but the STB is only emitting
Composite hence no chroma or vice versa.

You will need to manually specifiy the better protocols at both ends.

I had the same with my Sony until I tinkered with the settings. We use RGB
now anyway, but Sony's of that vintage only support RGB on Scart1.

I'm slightly puzzled by the relevance of the VCR to this scenario. Are you
in fact saying that any use of the Freeview remote results in the TV colour
reverting to monochrome? Is the VCR just a monochrome herring?

Use of the Freeview remote causes the TV to stop decoding the chroma
signal from the composite video. RGB input to the TV is still colour.
Since the VCR is the only device producing a composite video signal, it
is the only device to display in monochrome.

No it isn't.
The Freeview box is set to output RGB, and works great.
The VCR offers only S-Video or Video, and is set to Video.
I can turn up "chroma" on the TV, and both sources display in colour.

If I press any button on the Freeview remote, the LED on the TV flashes
to show a command has been received. Freeview then remains colour,
whilst the VCR displays in monochrome, until I turn up the chromanance
again.

It is definitely the Freeview control turning the TV to monochrome!
