I have a new 32" Sharp LCD HDTV with HDMI inputs. It is now connected to my
Comcast set-top box via component cable, not using the HDMI inputs. I noticed that the set-top box has DVI out. Would I see any appreciable difference in the picture if I connected via a DVI - HDMI cable? Or, on the other hand, if I got a Comcast set-top box with HDMI out, would I see any appreciable difference if I connected via a HDMI - HDMI cable? Thanks for your opinions. |

I had a DVR hooked up to a Sharp via HDMI. Turned out it was kind of annoying, and I switched to component. Can't tell any difference; maybe with a 1920 x 1080 picture you can tell. BTW, how do you propose using a DVI - HDMI cable? My Sharp has no external audio inputs associated with the HDMI, and DVI contains no audio. Tam |

Tam Aside from including audio in the HDMI cable, I've read that HDMI also incorporates copy protection logic. Some broadcasts or DVDs rely on that and if not present you may not be able see or copy the program. But I'm not sure exactly what the restrictions are. Perhaps some other ng readers can fill us in about that. I'm still at the beginning of the HD learning curve myself ;-) -=tom=- |

Thanks for your reply. I know nothing about this stuff, so did not realize
that DVI does not include audio. I believe that my Sharp LC-40C32U does have an audio input associated with the HDMI, but that defeats the goal of having only one cable. I could exchange my cable box for one with HDMI output, but the Comcast guy also said that the difference would hardly be noticeable. Just out of curiosity, what was "annoying" about the HDMI? Thanks again. |

The reason for having the audio inputs associated with an HDMI input is in case you have a DVI source: then you can still get the digital video in even if the TV has to take in analog sound. Scott |

I meant to say that I believe that my Sharp has an audio input associated
with the DVI (not HDMI). Too many initials! |

Thanks again. What was annoying is that going from a 4:3 picture to a 16:9 picture caused the view mode to change, like you would want it to; now, going back to a 4:3 picture did not change the view mode, and left me with side bars.
