No problem Bill, you get latitude here for the jocular OT stuff, and you
deserve it for the serious OT stuff too. I snipped so much in the reply,
but all worth reading ...

Cheers

Great news Bill.

I'm glad I've had one of those sleepless nights that we oldies get from
time to time, good news is in short supply these days.

You can be sure that the regulars in here will be happy to read your post,
as even something so impersonal as usenet can generate empathy over time,
as we've seen before in this n/g.

I'm going to bed now with a warm glow.

Best wishes to Hil and yourself, that's one tough cookie you married.

She needs to be. I've had various horrid illnesses and she's looked after me
splendidly, even when I've been in such a state that I was a truly
deplorable patient.

We laughed like mad the other day. She had to go to the dentist for a check
up (yes, just a check up!) and she said "I'm terrified!" I was incredulous.
Six months ago she was in Coronary Care connected to a whole lot of
machines, and she didn't know if she was on this earth or fuller's, and now
she's scared of a bloke who will do no more that peer into her gob! When I
put it to her like that she laughed.

Astonishingly, when I rung another lady that I'm very fond of yesterday to
tell her that Hil had got the all clear she said, "Well, so have I."
I said "Yer what?"
She said "Look, I didn't want to worry you so I didn't tell you and Hil, but
I've had a lump and I've been losing weight.But it's nothing. I got the
result today." I was totally gobsmacked.

Bill

Dentists don't bother me very much, but then, I don't bother them much
either.

I was taken for a check-up in 1954, when I was 6, and they took 7
teeth.

My next visit was in '68, with toothache, had a bad one pulled, and my
last visit was in '78, toothache, another one pulled.

As women will eagerly tell you, compared to them were wimps.

Them school dentists were butchers. They pulled half my teeth out and they
could have been saved. Shocking. Mind you I was nearly circumcised when I
was seven. Not by the dentist of course. I had an infection and the doctor
said with unseemly gusto, "Chop the little blighter's foreskin off!" but
luckily this wasn't done. Blimey, what a narrow escape. I regard
circumcision, for all reasons except very good medical ones, as assault. I
think anyone who was circumcised as a child for religious reasons should sue
their parents (and maybe rough them up a bit as well if they're frail).
Likewise, anyone allowing a child to have piercings should be prosecuted for
assisting an ABH. Furthermore, when a child under 8 gets run over I think
the circumstances should be investigated with a view to prosecuting the
parents for negligence. You drive about on these estates and there's tiny
kids running about on the street. A toddler came out from behind a wall the
other day and gave me a severe fright.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And the woman whose son was shot dead was on TV last week. It was when she
mentioned that he was shot at 2 in the morning (on a school day too) and he
was less than 15 years old that I just wondered whether she might blame
herself - just a little bit anyway.

I can't add anything useful to Bill's story except to say that I sincerely
wish him and his wife well for the future.

Don't be silly - it's always someone else's fault ;-(

I'm reminded of a news item the other day, about kids that won't eat the
healthy food now provided in schools.

It showed mothers taking orders for junk food outside the school, and
returning to pass the junk over the fence.

Maybe people should have to take an IQ test to decide whether they have
kids or not.

Think how many migrant workers we'd need then. :¬)

Lovely. Invokes images of chips being fed through the bars to hungry
children with grasping, greasy hands. :-)

Don't you think it's the parents job (and right) to decide what to feed
their own children, rather than Jamie ****ing Oliver?

A simpler solution would be contraceptive additives in McDonald's
food.

Right as may be, but they often get it very wrong....
