What format are Apple and Amazon using for their new movies services? 480p?
HD? Letterbox?

640x480 is DVD quality? 640x480 looks bad on anything bigger than a 14 inch

Yes, DVD is 720x480 (and often interlaced).

But there is a big difference between filtered video and a PC desktop, or
even many video games, which don't fare so well when scaled to a different
screen resolution.

NTSC encoded DVDs are 720x480 (actually 704x480) in resolution. Do not
confuse how dynamic movies or video look with computer displays of text
or spreadsheets.
