"Bob" wrote in message ... "Bill Kearney" wrote in message t... The big thing with the laptop fires was the batteries. Lithium Ion maybe?? Not the big thing, the ONLY thing. Yes, LI batteries. Not chemicals between, but particles in the chemicals causing a short, thus the fires. There's nothing at all like that in a Tivo unit. It's basically the same sort of gear you'd find in any other standard consumer media device like a VCR, tuner, disc player or video game console. Sure, there's a drive in it that spins all the time but there's nowhere near enough heat from it to cause any sort of fire, or any chemicals in it. So please, troll for hype elsewhere. Uh??? You talking to me?? I'm not trolling anything anywhere. I didn't start this thread, I responded to it. I pointed out that the fires from laptops were caused by the batteries and Tivos have no batteries. Did I miss something here?? I've never seen the insides of a TiVo, but I'd guess there is a battery to power the RTC while the unit is not powered. It's likely to be a button cell. |

there are hundreds of thousands ( maybe millions ) of computer hard drives that run 24/7/365... they don't burst into flames... the tivo drives are standard maxtor drives that you'd find in any computer. I had a Maxtor / Quantum Fireball 10gb that burst into flames about 5 years ago. The controller chip on the bottom board decided to torch itself. Was a quite common failure mode. Steve |

I've never seen the insides of a TiVo, but I'd guess there is a battery to power the RTC while the unit is not powered. It's likely to be a button cell. Aside from the battery to power the clock, I should have been more clear on that. I was referring to battery packs, similar to laptops to power the unit when not plugged into the wall. And.......I want to see Randy S and his steel wool magic tick. That would be pretty wild. lol. And his Mom only told him not to play with matches. |

Steve I always wondered why Quantum named that model "Fireball". This explains everything - truth in advertising! |

Boy Scouts are taught how to start fires with various methods, and one of the easiest is a battery and some steel wool (Hence, the Boy Scout motto, "Be Prepared"). Sheesh! Lighten up! Randy S. |
