I only have BB and phone through NTL. Digi TV is through a Skybox so I
couldn`t say. iText is pretty slow on that but I`m not sure if that is more
to do with the fact that my Skybox is an old Pace than anything else.

My daughter's NTL service down south was
like treacle. BTW yes Tyneside is Telewest )

I am with Telewest and now use Skype for all my phone needs. Saves me
100 pounds a year line rental plus loads in call costs.

Yet Skype is one of the dearest VoIP providers, who also charge for an
incoming number!

I have TW digital TV (Starter TV package), only have the TV as I am
getting it free with reduced cost 4mbit broadband (offer extended), I
certainly wouldn't pay for cable TV, the interactive / text service is
dreadfully slow as is the whole system, my one Freeview box is almost
instant, the other a little slower, my Sky Dodgy-box is very fast with
these services (no longer subscribe to a Sky service, just use it as a
FTV/FTA box).

Don't have a phone line, have an ATA and use VoIP.

There's a thread on MSE about getting deals on NTL.

I be thinkin': I get Freeview for nought, 8Mbps broadband for £14.99 and my
phone bill is usually £13 including calls. I don't really need cable do I?

Their rates may not be the cheapest, but the bulk of my calls are free
by talking to people direct via Skype, plus I have the convenience of
using my normal cordless DECT phones with it so I an not tethered to
my PC like a lot of VOIP clients would be.

20 quid a year compared to ~120 from BT or Cable, big deal.

I know, I just thought it was NTL that covered the whole of the NE at the
moment. That`s were I`m from.

WRONG!

Virtually all allow you to use an ATA which you connect your DECT to,
it's only Skype that force you to have to have a PC switched on, with
proper VoIP providers, you use the ATA and the PC doesn't need to be on.

VoIPCheap, VoIPStunt, SIPDiscount, VoIPBuster, Sipgate, VoIPTalk,
OrbTalk, and the many other SIP VoIP providers do not requre the use of
a PC to make and receive calls, because they are all an open standard
and not propriery like Skype there are many ATAs and if you don't want
to use you own phones, VoIP Phones available all at lower costs that a
Skype DECT bodged device.

20 quid more than proper VoIP providers.

Skype charges for voicemail, proper VoIP it's free.

Proper VoIP charges less for calls.

People use Skype when they don't realise proper, cheaper and better VoIP
services are out there.

snip

Thanks for the info, I didn't know about ATA's. I will stick with
Skype for now though as it serves my needs.

Are you sure? A quick glance at VoIPCheap and VoIPTalk suggests that
they require a pc indeed VoIPCheap claims to only work on Windows.
Also, part of VoIPTalk's website is broken (impressive!) and VoIPCheap
wasn't selling itself to me when I found this in their FAQs:

"If you want to enjoy uninterrupted calls to our free* destinations,
please upgrade your account by buying credit."

Skype may not be the best but I wasn't impressed by these two.
