You have this back to front.

Most people taking Sky+ are already die-hard full-package Sky
subscribers who would have Sky anyway

Hmm, you may have a point there.

I don't know.

You can say that again.

I will accept no lectures from someone who states that you can record
from HDCP sources and that DVD recording is "not possible".

Who doesn't have the choice?
Those who don't live in a Freeview area yet wish to make bitstream
recordings of the main terrestrial channels.

So maybe those people could wait a few years?

Why should they have to?

Why SHOULDN'T they have to?

Given that the same technology is available on DTT I see no reason why
those using satellite should have to pay Sky to make such recordings
when on DTT they can perform an identical procedure for free.

If the same technology is available on DTT for free, then they can use
that, then, can't they.

Actually HDMI allows you to make your own bitstream recordings for
playback on your own equipment.

Are you quite sure about that?

Yes.

Though of course I should have said HDCP and not HDMI.

Only Sky+ charges for this, and the charge is unjustified as the
entire functionality is contained within the box at the time of
purchase.

In your opinion.

No opinion involved at all. Simple and undeniable fact.

And like I said, what if the software to enable user recording was NOT
in the box as sold, and was only downloaded when you paid for the Sky+
service? Would that be different?

It would to a small extent.

The same does not apply because you are comparing generic with

This is precisely the problem. Sky+ is a monopoly product that no one
else makes, because Sky prevent them from doing so.

Sky prevent anyone else broadcasting over satellite? Will these
newsflashes never end?

It has been explained to you numerous times that without a VideoGuard
CAM one cannot receive the FTV UK transmissions. Sky refuse to release
such a CAM, which makes the Sky+ a monopoly product.

Of course the same applies in spades to the pay Sky channels, but
these are not my concern.

Granted. But decent equipment gets you a perfectly acceptable

No, it doesn't.

Yes it does. 99.99% of people would be unable to tell the difference.

Total nonsense.

You should, as I know exactly what I am talking about. HDCP is
designed specifically with the ability to allow users to make
bitstream recordings on their own equipment but not to be able to
share them.

HDCP has been cracked already, anyway.

and that DVD recording is "not possible".

This is an incomplete quote and I treat it with the contempt that it
deserves.

OK.. Can you point towards any source of equipment which allows you to
make your own recordings of HDCP material?
