But I don't think it has the Faroudja chip
www.oppodigital.com -- All the Best Richard Harison "Mike S." wrote in message ... In article , Rob wrote: wrote on Tue, 05 Sep 2006 17:09:44 GMT: hello, ive read all about the Faroudja chipset and why its cool. Oppo seems to be the enthusiasts choice. is there any difference between the Oppo and say Samsung, or others which use the same chipset? one advantage i can think of is universal remote-control settings. Don't forget about the new German Panasonic DVD-S99 and it's predecessor, the DVD-S97 late in UK but still available in US, IIRC. Both are excellent machines and very similar to Oppo but with HDMI instead of DVI interface. The new, cheaper Oppo DV-970HD uses HDMI. ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Unrestricted-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- |

But I don't think it has the Faroudja chip that is correct, it does not; so im not really considering it. i asked oppo why 971 doesnt have it and he said at the time of its design hdmi was a bit flaky. on avsforums there are rumors about their forth-coming replacement for the 971, which will have hdmi. matt |

really though, what's the real advantage to HDMI when the 971 has both
optical/coaxial digital audio out? Seems like just one more cable to run, that's all -- All the Best Richard Harison wrote in message ups.com... Seems like just one more cable to run, that's all one cable. rather, the *elimination* of running one more cable -- HDMI does both audio & video. im not an audiophile, so i couldnt tell you if its any good for audio or not, but for my purposes, its good. i just wanna "set it & forget it", audio & video on one cable. matt |

Here is the main 971 thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=491306 And for the 970: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=682896 Note there are many thousands of postings on these subjects. -Bill -- Sattre Press Tales of War http://sattre-press.com/ by Lord Dunsany http://sattre-press.com/tow.html |

Agreed. My kit is setup for HDMI only. A Gefen 3-port switch is used to connect it all together. I guess if you run the hdmi to your tv and playback audio through your tv's speakers then you've ~eliminated~ a cable...but what's the fun in that? Don't mean to detract from your fun, but I used to a have very extensive kit. Top-end Paradigm speakers, subwoofer and Denon receiver and found I was focused more on kit rather the film I was actually there to watch. I also had over 200 DVD titles. After awhile I became bored with it all because it became very cumbersome and not very much fun. These days I'm overly selective of kit and DVD titles. If the film and PQ are good, I'm happy!! Only thing I really miss though are the depth charge scenes of the DTS track of R1 "U-571". -- Rob £¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤øø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤øø¤º°`° º¤¤º°`°º¤£ |

Khee Mao wrote: just a giant HDTV, gotcha. on the contrary -- the 36" sony crt i have in mind isnt really that large. its just a tv, which i may very well hide inside an armoir. it is not a 50" display, dvd player, vcr, game console, reciever, audio components, media pc, entertainment hub. big difference. matt |
