"[email protected]" writes "Kevin Seal" wrote in message ... In message , "[email protected]" writes "Roger R" wrote in message ... The local electrical store had Toshiba portable DVD players at around 150 pounds had 'bitstream' input in addition to the normal AV inputs. What format is this bitstream input? Bitstream is a method of doing digital to analogue conversion. It was developed as a cheaper way of decoding digital CD audio (by removing most of the expensive hardware). Close, but no cigar. http://www.promastering.com/pages/te.../tt-1_mac.html Close to what? Bitstream is what I described. It was developed by Philips years ago. Sony? had a a different version but they didn't call that Bitstream as Philips had the name. It is also a font technology but I doubt if that is relevent here. Then of course there is the generic term bitstream which refers to any stream of bits, audio, video, etc. which also has no relevence here. You have now quantified your statement, so I stand by my original close but no cigar. As such there is no such thing as a bitstream input or output. Wrong. So what is a Bitstream input then? Like some definition of the signal properties, the connector type, etc. would be useful. You said "there is no such thing as a bitstream input or output". Well, the Toshiba HD-XA1 would appear to prove you wrong. -- Kevin Seal (at home) F800ST {kevin at the hyphen seal hyphen house dot freeserve dot co dot uk} |

I said Bitstream as did the original poster. It is a DA converter technique. The Tosh has the following 1 x 5.1 channel audio line-out, 1 x HDMI, 1 x Component video output, 1 x S-Video output, 1 x Composite video output, 1 x Audio line-out, 1 x Digital audio output, 1 x Digital audio output (optical), 1 x Network, 1 x Serial, 2 x USB All pretty standard stuff according to the review. |

I said Bitstream as did the original poster. It is a DA converter technique. It is a tradename used by some manufacturers for that purpose. However I have also seen it used to describe the digital ouput stream from a DVD player. IIRC this was to distinguish the digital format used for multichannel from SPDIF stereo. SPDIF is an 'old' format designed primarily for stereo, so a different format was developed to convey multichannel for 'Dolby' digital, etc. In this context it defines the data format used. Digital Audio Output Options. The HD-XA1 can pass digital information to a surround-sound processor/receiver with S/PDIF or HDMI. For Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks, the bitstream will be passed through both connections, just as in a standard DVD player with the same interfaces. Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD soundtracks will be converted to a standard bitstream Dolby Digital) output through S/PDIF or HDMI. Additionally, all of the HD-XA1's supported audio formats can be decoded to PCM and output via HDMI in stereo or 5.1 multichannel, depending on the original soundtrack. -- Kevin Seal (at home) F800ST {kevin at the hyphen seal hyphen house dot freeserve dot co dot uk} |
