Default Calibrations

I want to get a DVD to calibrate my Sony XBR1. I searched Amazon.com and
they sell 4 of them:

The AVIA Guide to Home Theater (1999) $37

Digital Video Essentials: Optimize Your Home Entertainment System (NTSC
Component) (2001) $20

The Ultimate DVD - Home Theater Fine Tuning Made Simple (2005) $18

Monster/ISF HDTV Calibration Wizard DVD $30

Any recommendations? Price is not a factor, but I am not experienced with
this stuff and need one that isn't too tough to understand.

Thanks, Allen

If you can download and burn your own DVD, I recommend the GetGray disk at
http://www.calibrate.tv/. It comes with minimal documentation, but I use only
three screens. There is a dedicated forum for it at avsforum.com, along with a
whole section devoted to calibration in general.

It is handy to have the blue filter glasses which thx.com sells for $1 plus
shipping.

If you want some experience before buying a disk, the THX Optimizer available
in the setup section of some film disks will give you an idea of what's
involved. Most people who do calibration say it is better than nothing, but
they don't rely on it as their main tool.

I use "Digital Video Essentials" (PAL Component) because it's wider colour
gamut and black levels more adequately match HDTV levels than do the NTSC
component.

It's available at Amazon.co.uk

There's another one. Sound & Vision magazine puts out the Home Theater
Tuneup. It's extremely easy to use and has all of the necessary test
patterns for advanced work in the service menu. The introduction is
outstanding and navigating is a breeze, which can be difficult with DVE
and Avia (I own both of those also). If you are new at calibrating,
you might give the Home Theater Tuneup a try.
