Hi All Quick question!
Is there such a lead as a USB2 to Firewire? I have a USB to PS2 adaptor and was wondering if similar exists for firewire? Never seen any in local shops. |

No Er, Yes! http://usbfirewire.com/uadapters.html Doc this is a converter and you will lose transfer speed and possibly introduce errors - if you can install a firewire card in your PC at a much cheaper cost and it would be a lot better technically... It's not MAC compatible if that's an issue |

It's not MAC compatible if that's an issue This depends on how they've implemented the interface. Technically there is no reason why a USB/Firewire converter should introduce errors although you may loose speed. that said, speed depends on many things and given a fast PC and USB 2.0, you may notice no difference at all. WARNING: Many PCs (even apparently "recent" models) have only USB1.1 ports. Investigate this first because USB1.1 is very slow and will not work with this device (or if it does, it will be slow to the point of useless). The key aspect of this converted is whether it looks, to any PC software, like a real Firewire connector. If it does, you might find that all works and it's as good for you as a real Firewire. However it might force you into using their own proprietry software, in which case I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. But for 100% satisfaction, a real Firewire port would be better if you can fit one to your PC. If not, something like this device might work. Paul DS. |

Given that they sell both PAL and NTSC versions, I'd say this was most certainly the case. A generic adaptor would have to implement a full emulation of the firewire interface. This seems to be purely for camcorder video capture, using their own supplied software. But for 100% satisfaction, a real Firewire port would be better if you can fit one to your PC. Definitely. And a lot cheaper. |

I would be awkward! I want Digtal to Digital not Digital to Analogue which would happen using composite. |

Then surely the way to go is via a PC with a USB port and Firewire card (is that what a DV port is?). Admitedly it's not quite as convenient but it should do what you want. Paul DS. |

A DV in port on a DVD-R is technically a FireWire port, but only in the sense that it can accept a DV stream. The USB port on the camcorder will NOT output a DV stream, I expect is simply a USB Mass Storage interface to enable PCs to download data from it, or at best use a proprietary application to get video off it. You might like to look at the following site: http://www.cwol.com/firewire/firewire-vs-usb.htm which highlights important differences in the workings of FireWire vs USB and shows why an adaptor might not be the best thing to use anyway. I would think you have software with your camcorder to download video and burn to DVD which will likely produce better results than a standalone DVD-R deck anyway |
