I live in a flat in Central London (Pimlico), that has, over the years,
accumulated miles of NTL (TV and ethernet) and telephone cabling. I wish to re-route these cables in a more logical structure and where I can, move them under (relativey untrodden upon) areas of carpet. I therefore need someone who knows how to re-route and re-terminate NTL cable TV and ethernet cables and BT telephone cables AND lift and replace carpet edges. NTL will do the former, but not the latter. Any ideas how I might find somebody who can do both - probably just a couple of hours work? Thanks Nick |

If s/he is qualified or experienced then s/he will tell you that it is not a
good idea to run cables under carpets. If s/he is happy to do it without warning you then s/he isn't qualified or experienced! ;-) Seriously running cables under carpets is just asking for a break or a short. Suppose you don't mind if your laptop looses the ability to connect via its network socket because two shorted cables have blown the ic on the motherboard? It CAN hapen! -- Robert |

Thanks for the tip Rob - I am however planning to run them around the
edge of the room (next to, but certainly not in contact with the gripper), where there is no loading on the carpet - apart from the odd daddy-long-legs or two! Thanks for the albeit rather cheeky advice - what I don't know however
is how to terminate NTL's TV and ethernet cables, where to buy the plugs and what tools are needed to fit them. Also, If I radically reduce the lengths of cable, will this over-egg the signal strength, requiring yet more supression? Thanks for the albeit rather cheeky advice - what I don't know however Sorry, must have been in a funny mood! ;-) is how to terminate NTL's TV and ethernet cables, where to buy the plugs and what tools are needed to fit them. The plugs on the coax cables are typically F connectors. The simplest type to fit are the twist on plugs. You can get these from shops like Maplin or mail order from www.cpc.co.uk These are easy to fit and require no tools other than a pair of wire strippers or a sharp knife. http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/fconn.htm Telecoms wiring is also easy enough. Make a note of which colour wire goes to which terminals (there are usually only three wires connected - and six terminals to choose from!) and set about putting them back the way you found them. You will probably come up against some IDC terminals that require a tool to insert the wires. Again places like Maplin will do a disposable version of this for a few pence. See here for examples: http://www.solwise.co.uk/networking_sundries.htm#KROHN All the socketry you may require is also freely available: http://www.solwise.co.uk/telesun.htm And there are plenty of groups about including this one and uk.d-i-y, or uk.telecom where you will find people who can explain what to do. Also, If I radically reduce the lengths of cable, will this over-egg the signal strength, requiring yet more supression? Unlikely. -- Cheers, John. /================================================== ===============\ | Internode Ltd - http://www.internode.co.uk | |-----------------------------------------------------------------| | John Rumm - john(at)internode(dot)co(dot)uk | \================================================= ================/ |
