Default Goodmans GDB3 in constant standyby mode

For the past while now my GDB3 Freeview box has been in constant standby
mode. Unplugging it for periods of time does not bring it back to life.
Ive tried the remote, but that does not help.

Has anyone else experience this problem with this make. I tried to update
the firmware using an RS232 to see if that would bring it back to life, but
when I hit the reset button Hyperterminal does not recognise the box.

Any advice apart from buying a new one.

Thanks

Are you sure the remote isn't faulty, or even that the battery isn't flat?

Hi Max

That was the 1st thing I did was swapping over the batteries.

Wonder if the remote is faulty.

I followed this guide to updating the box

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jeremy.pick/gdb3/guide.htm

But it would not talk to the GDB3.

It seems to be a common problem on that model. Possibly a PSU fault.

At the price a replacement is probably the best option, though it may be
worth googling for

+"stuck in standby" +"GDB3" to see if anyone has a miracle cure.

Jc.

To check the remote try looking at the IR LED through your digital
camera while pressing buttons. You should see it flashing.

Good tip for a basic battery test, but I have a remote for a Matsui
DTR-1 where something like the crystal or ceramic oscillator has drifted
and so the signal timing is out - you can still see the IR LED in a
camera but the set top box does not recognise the flashes. I've had two
remotes for the DTR-1 go this way and ended up buying a new compatible
from CPC.

The pocket keyboard for my Dell PDA has an IR link, can't see anything
in my camera though but it works OK!

tried the camera trick, the remote is working fine. guess the box is plain
gubbed.

ive seen a wharfdale in argos for £29.99 so I may go for that.
