Default Do Upconverting DVD Players Work?

cgott wrote on Wed, 23 Aug 2006 17:17:51 GMT:

I have an HDTV and was wondering if the cheaper upconverting DVD
players like Samsung's actually provide a better picture than a
standard player. Anyone have any experience with them? The Samsung is
only about $80.

I recently purchased a Philips DVP-5960 upconverting player at Circuit
City for USD$70.00. It's a good machine, easily hackable via remote for
my multiregion requirements but has motion issues on PAL sport DVD's. For
this reason 720P is better for them than 1080i.

DVD quality are significant issues here. I have the UK R2 release of
LOTR:Return of the King (Extended Edition) and it truely looks like an HD
DVD. Other R2 and R4 titles that aren't as well mastered don't look as
good.

However, the Philips machine is just a temporary measure until the new
Panasonic DVD-S99EG-S is released and is stable in Germany. At that point
(in 6-9 months) I plan to import one, provided I can verify it will
successfully operate on our 60 Hz. mains. This machine will definitely
solve all the problems the Philips have because of it's Faroudja
processing, motion adaptive circuitry and highly effective 50 Hz to 60 Hz
framerate conversion.

Same for me, 720p is the best setting for my Oppo player.

The most significant reason I went with the Oppo was the
Genesis/Faroudja chipset, it's motion adaptive circuitry, framerate
conversion. etc. The upconversion is nice, but for me not the most
critical feature.

Oppo are nice machines, but I require HDMI interface.

The Oppo 970 is hdmi. The 971 comes with a DVI-HDMI cable.

A Samsung upconverter will not look as good as an older non converting deck
like a Toshiba. Try a Toshiba or Sony upconverting deck.

Then go for the 970--but it does not AFAIK have the Genesis/Faroudja chip.
(Perhaps that's why it's cheaper)

Both Oppo 970 and 971 can be made region-free by entering a code through the
remote. Both also play PAL disks and do PAL--NTSC conversion.
