Default How to make a "blank" space on a DVD?

The subject line pretty much says it all. I'd like to put
an interval of something innocuous between unrelated
items on a DVD, so that one item doesn't flow into
the next if nobody presses STOP. I can't find anything
remotely useful in the channel lineup (even a news
crawl with pleasant music would do, but we don't
have one of those anymore). Any ideas? Thanks.

A DVD can contain several titles, and most DVD authoring programs will
support that. Why not make each of your items a separate title, and create a
main menu page that lets you play the one you want. When the playback
reaches the end of the title you should see the main menu again; it won't
play through to the second title.

Can you record TV static?

Yup, but it's noisy, not exactly the relaxing gap I had been looking for.
But now that someone has clued in me, a newbie, about multiple titles,
that definitely sounds the way to go. Thanks to Abe, and honorable
mention to you.

Do such programs to record DVDs also include chapter breakdown as well as title?

I don't know the details on that. I seem to recall that one program I used
would just create a chapter mark every 5 minutes or so (better than
nothing). I have a program that lets me transfer from DVD-RAM (recorded on a
Panasonic DVR) to DVD, and I think it copies the chapter marks as there were
set on the DVD-RAM, which I can create while it's in the DVR.

It's a shame that DVD players (at least not my Samsung Progressive) don't have a
visible Fast Forward function like VCRs (not the awkward chapter setup.
How often have you, say, wanted to play back only the previous 5 seconds, etc?

I am no expert however I put a video capture card in my PC to record
HI-8 from my older camera (using S-Video) so I could burn home movies to
DVDs. I used the free software (Pinnacle Studeo 9) that came with the
card. As I recorded to the PC the software make a new chapter every time
I had stoped the restarted the video camera. This made about 10 chapters
in my 30 monute video. I could than leave or delete the chapters. For
home movies the software was very pretty good. I also used a 'Menu' to
make the DVD easy to get around in. Pinnacle is very basic but I got a
good working DVD of our vacation. I event adjusted the hue and added a
wind filter to the audio. Now to start on all those old VHS tapes!!
