Default HD DVR Replacement Query

My local cable company installed a Scientific Atlanta SA-8300HD DVR late
last year.

Earlier this year in February they did a system update to DVR which
resulted in itermittent HDMI-HDCP error and subsequent DVR reboot upon
power up after which all is fine until next time. This reboot takes about
5 minutes about 3-4 times per week. I'm just tired of this and have been
led to believe a machine replacement is the only solution for the problem.

My problem with machine replacement though is I have 2 excellent
surfing movies, "Endless Summer II" and "Step Into Liquid" that were
recorded off HDNet earlier this year on this DVR and I don't want to lose
them. : (

Is there any way to transfer disk content of old machine to new machine?

I don't know if you can transfer the movies but the SA8300 HD DVR has a
"Copy to VCR" function. You won't get HD but you should be able to watch
the movies. I'll admit I never tried to copy an HD program to VCR so maybe
it won't work

Some of the hard disk drive mfg's are offering drives formatted for DVR
content.
When I inquired with my cable company they indicated the storage was not
supported - probably an inquiry to the hard drive mfg would be worthwhile.

I tried it through the S Video output of the 8300. It worked. About what you
would expect of VCR quality.

Can't you hook an external USB drive to the SA8300HD? If so, there must
be a hidden copy function from one drive to the other...

Sure there is. Either play it into another recorder or pull the drive and
copy the files. Trobably easier to copy it to vcr, DVD recorder or another
dvr.

Thanks for the responses, but my plan has developed to either of the
following:
1) Rollback the firmware to pre-February 2006 revision level
2) Replace the disk on the new DVR with the disk from the old DVR

Nothing short of either of these choices will be acceptable.

BTW, unless you've viewed either of the above films in 1080i HD, you're
missing out. HDNet have done a spectacular job with them.

Also "Step Into Liquid" was on again last night!!! : ) : )

I copy stuff to DVD +R using the component output from my HR-250 into my
Philips DVDR 615. The quality id actually pretty good in 2 or 2 1/2 hour
mode -- especiall with progressive scan.

The quality is as good as a DVD movie. Don't know if that is acceptable to
you, but it is to me.

I don't think that would work. I believe the recorded programs are
locked to the cable box in which they are recorded.
