Default SKY broadband --- NO Thanks !!!

...my existing ISP is ZEN (pricey but extremely reliable with good tech.
support)..I decide to go for SKY Unlimited - £10-00 per month and thought
"what the hell - let's give it a try..."

The MAN from SKY came yesterday (part of the deal was free
installation....).... After nearly 2 hours he went --- with all the stuff
(router/cd/ect)....

Would it work ... NO WAY... He was on the phone to his techy people and
they couldn't get it to run.... In the end we all gave up and he put the job
down as cancelled.

Why it wouldn't work no-one knew.... The installer has been with Sky for 8
years and has done dozens of Sky box /dish, SKY + and SKY HD installations
.... BUT this was (after his initial training) HIS FIRST 'REAL' 'LIVE'
installation... If this is the way it's going to go Sky will get slaughtered
by the media and customers....

I'm having a deep re-think (Sky are going to give me another installation
date)... BUT really I don't think its worth it.... (no free web space - no
newsgroups)...

Anyone else on here had it installed and happy ??????

As if 8 years of dish installation (during which time he had only done
dozens?) was in any way useful when it comes to installing an ADSL
router.

This is like getting a tiler to install a washing machine.

How long did it take from cancelling ZEN to being converted to Skys service
and how did you do it ?
I know a couple of people thinking of moving to Sky but were told they
have to cancel their existing provider first as Sky can't handle the
migration
from one provider to another...or is that just customer service not knowing
what they're doing ?

No Sky are correct. The service uses LLU (Local Loop Unbundling). In
short Sky install their own kit at the exchange, or rather Easynet who
they bought last year. Most existing broadband connections are provided
by BT Wholesale, regardless of ISP. Migrating between them is easy,
because only an authentication change (keystrokes) is required.

Moving from that to LLU requires rewiring at your exchange.
