Yes, two separate TiVo boxes, each with its own subscription,
can
operate independently. My family has his-and-hers SA TiVos.
Our first TiVo was getting confuse by two greatly different
sets of Wishlist and Suggestions. Two identical TiVos can
live
peacefully in the same room as long as you go into Setup and
change one to remote code 1 and the other to remote code 2.

Sorry, I guess this isn't ever going to be clear to me, but I
meant
one TiVo with two cable boxes. The TiVo changing channels on
one
and the other having to be changed some other way, I guess.

You are talking about a Dual Tuner TiVo I presume. Yes you would
have to use your cable box remote to change the channel on the
one not controlled by the TiVo.

Call me optimistic, but I'd guess a DT TiVo can select channels
on any source it can record.

From what others have said here there is only one serial
connection for changing cable box channels on the Dual Tuner
TiVo.

The DT TiVo can't access programming from two cable boxes at once.
Basic cable doesn't require a cable box and digital cable likely must have one.

Has this thread gone full circle yet?

From the TiVo web site: http://www.tivo.com/2.0.asp
"*Record 2 basic cable channels, or one basic cable and one digital cable channel, at once."

TiVo isn't "assuming" anything. The statement describes a limitation
of the TiVo DT DVR. It will not control two cable boxes.

On Cox, there is no serial port, so one of the boxes would have to be
controlled by the cable companies software, I guess.

We are not talking about DT TiVo, though. At least I'm not. And that is what
seems to be one reason this thread doesn't resolve anything.

Exactly. But is he talking about Direct TV TiVo, when he says "DT"? Because
Direct TV does not have a cable box. It has a satellite receiver, right?
Satellite is very different because a TiVo doesn't haven't to compress
Direct TV programs as they come that way to the box, while cable comes in as
analog and has to be compressed to mpeg or whatever it is? What is it Divx
or MPeg?
