Default Premium AV Cables

Saw this article in today's Sunday Times. I know this is the silly
season but thought it must be a late April 1st offering that didn't make
it then. Thought it would be of interest to the lurkers here who want a
35 GBP aerial fly-lead or a 75 GBP mains lead!

Certainly gave me a good laugh, especially -

============
"AERIAL SAVIOUR
QED QUNEX TTV (1.5 metres) — typically £35, or £31.99 from
www.hifibitz.co.uk

What is it? Connects TV to wall aerial socket.

Why buy? With two layers of shielding, this classy QED reflects 40 times
more “digital noise” than a freebie RF cable. You will enjoy sharper
pictures and less ghosting."

I am reluctant to laugh. The reports I've had are that - yet again this
year - the numbers of students going to uni to study topics like
engineering and physics have fallen.

Media Studies up again, it would seem.

Hence the above technobabble. :-/

For a market/democracy/society to function well, it requires the people to
be able to make *well informed* decisions. QED, indeed.

Slainte,

Jim

And from yesterday's Times - one of their headline writers seems to think that
an article about the DNA differences between chimpanzees and humans (both
apes) needs a reference to both monkeys and tails*.

That ignoramus might well be described as a monkey - and, as you say, the ST
seems to be no better.

*Most monkeys do have tails but, whilst the chimps and humans share an
ancestor 5-7 million years ago you ave to go back a further 20 million years
before either of us share ancestors with any monkeys. A 20 million year error
when your subject is a 5 million year gap is more than a touch unfortunate.

I've just read this article - ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE!!

This kind of garbage completely undermines the credibility of the newspaper
and the people who edit it! I note that the article is adapted from "What
HiFi" magazine which is full of this kind of absurd nonsense from cover to
cover.

What hope is there for the innocent buyer who is looking for good value for
money?

A few years ago, the Wireless/Electronics World (or whatever it's called
these days) did a proper, honest lab test comparison between some
expensive speaker leads and ordinary mains cable (with and without the
neutral and earth conductors being connected in parallel). No surprises,
of course.

Hopefully, the 'innocent buyer' doesn't have that sort of money to waste.

I've always considered 'premium' cables to be a ridiculous rip off (eg.
Maplin's shortest HDMI cable is ninety pounds!).

Is there a rule of thumb when buying cables? I imagine good insulation and
good conductivity on the connectors is important, therefore should people go
for gold plated connectors and assume the rest of the cable is of a similar
high standard?

You don't use gold connectors unless the mating connector is also gold.
If you buy a gold plated SCART and put it in a normal tin/lead connector it
will give you a worse connection than if you use a proper tin/lead SCART
cable.
Digital cables either work correctly or they don't work at all.
So there is no point in paying more than 99p for coax digital audio or £10
for DVI/HDMI.

Analogue cables like SCART need individual screens on each audio and video.
Many SCARTs don't.
My properly screened ones cost me £4 each and you will not get a better
picture by paying £200 for the 1M length they are.
You may if its 10m.

Likewise any cheap £20 CD/DVD player will give exactly the same digital
audio out as one that costs £3000.
The analogue may be [email protected] but who uses analogue from CD?DVD these days?

There are plenty of fools out there that will disagree and they will have
their money extracted by marketers for nothing.
